Anaphylaxis: Be Ready, Act Fast 🌟

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within minutes. If you or your child has a history of severe allergies, being prepared truly matters.

💉 Always carry 2 adrenaline auto-injectors
Whether it’s an EpiPen, Jext, or Emerade (where available), make sure you have two devices with you at all times. A second dose may be needed if symptoms don’t improve after 5 minutes.

🕒 Check expiry dates regularly
Adrenaline auto-injectors lose effectiveness over time. Take a moment to check the sell-by/expiry date and request a replacement from your GP or pharmacy if it’s approaching expiry.

📏 Make sure you’re on the correct dose
Different devices come in adult and junior strengths. If you’re unsure which dose you or your child should be prescribed, please speak to one of our clinicians we’re here to help.

🚨 In an emergency:
1️⃣ Give the adrenaline auto-injector immediately
2️⃣ Call 999 and say “anaphylaxis”
3️⃣ Lie flat with legs raised (unless breathing is difficult—then sit up)
4️⃣ Use your second injector after 5 minutes if there’s no improvement
5️⃣ Stay in hospital for observation
Your preparedness can save a life.

If you need a review of your allergy action plan or prescriptions, contact the surgery. 💙

🩺 Let’s talk about PSA testing

The PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test is a blood test that measures a protein made by the prostate gland. It can help detect signs of prostate problems — including prostate cancer — but it’s not a straightforward screening test.

A raised PSA level doesn’t always mean cancer, and a normal PSA doesn’t always rule it out. That’s why we take your age, family history, ethnicity, and symptoms into account before deciding whether the test is right for you.

You might consider speaking to your GP about a PSA test if you:
* Have urinary symptoms (difficulty passing urine, weak flow, or going more often at night)
* Have a family history of prostate cancer
* Are Black or of African-Caribbean heritage (higher risk)
* Are over 50 years old (or over 45 if higher risk)

If you’d like to discuss your prostate health or the PSA test, book an appointment to talk it through. Your GP can help you make an informed choice that’s right for you.

Early conversations can make a difference.

2025 marks the 10th annual campaign, taking place 3 - 9 November.

This year’s theme is ‘we can all help make medicines safer’, and in the UK the focus is on the importance of reporting suspected adverse reactions to medicines, vaccines and medical devices to the Yellow Card Scheme.

As a patient you should feel informed about the medications you are prescribed and feel able to report suspected problems. Speak to your GP for more information.

❄️ Winter illnesses are here, but antibiotics aren’t always the answer. 💊

As we move through the colder months, many patients experience coughs, colds, sore throats and sinus infections.

These are most often caused by viruses, and antibiotics do not help viral infections.

Overusing antibiotics contributes to antibiotic resistance, making these essential medicines less effective for everyone, especially when they’re truly needed for serious bacterial infections.

Here’s how to manage most winter illnesses safely 👇
🌿 Self-care first - rest, fluids, and over-the-counter remedies can help ease symptoms.
🕒 Be patient- viral coughs and colds can last up to 2 weeks.
💊 Trust clinical advice – your GP or pharmacist will advise if antibiotics are appropriate.
🧼 Prevent infections – wash hands regularly, keep up with vaccinations if eligible and stay home if unwell.
❤️ Use antibiotics responsibly – protect their power for the future.

Together, we can keep antibiotics effective for ourselves, our community, and the NHS. 💙

Who’s Eligible for the COVID‑19 Vaccine in 2025 / 2026?

If you’re wondering whether you (or someone you care for) can get a COVID‑19 vaccine this season, here’s what you need to know.

You can get a COVID‑19 vaccine on the NHS if you are:

💉Aged 75 or over (or will turn 75 by 31 January 2026)
💉Living in a care home for older adults
💉Aged 6 months or older with a weakened immune system (because of a health condition or treatment)

The COVID‑19 vaccine programme is now more focused: it’s no longer routinely offered to all clinical risk groups or healthy adults under 75.

If you have a long‑term condition (like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease) but do not meet the immunosuppression criteria, you may not be eligible this year.

The programme will run from 1 October 2025 until 31 January 2026 for eligible groups.

You don’t have to wait for an invitation - if you’re eligible, you can come forward.

If you’re unsure about whether your condition qualifies you for immunosuppression criteria you can;

⭐️Check online here www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/covid-19-vaccine/
⭐️Speak to reception by 01264 337979
