Your GP a nag? Surely NOT 😜

Hypertension, more commonly known as high blood pressure, is a very common condition that affects many adults, often without causing any noticeable symptoms. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps. When this pressure is consistently too high, it can put extra strain on your heart and blood vessels.

Blood pressure is measured using two numbers:

1) Systolic pressure (the top number): the pressure when your heart beats
2)Diastolic pressure (the bottom number): the pressure when your heart rests between beats

Hypertension is usually diagnosed when blood pressure readings are consistently 140/90 mmHg or higher (or 135/85 mmHg if measured at home).

Why does hypertension matter?
If left untreated, high blood pressure can increase the risk of serious health problems, including:
- Heart disease and heart attacks
- Stroke
- Kidney disease
- Vision problems

Many people can control their blood pressure through healthy lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, reducing salt intake, stopping smoking, and limiting alcohol. Some people may also need medication prescribed by their GP.

If you have concerns about your blood pressure or would like it checked, please speak to a member of our practice team.

💤 Healthy Sleep = Happy Kids 💤🌙

As parents, we all want our kids to be healthy, happy, and full of energy. One of the simplest ways to support your child’s wellbeing is by making sure they get enough sleep. Healthy sleep helps with everything from mood and concentration to growth and immune health.

🛏️ How Much Sleep Do Children Need?
Preschoolers (3–5 years): 10-13 hours per night
School-age kids (6–12 years): 9-12 hours per night
Teens (13-18 years): 8-10 hours per night

The NHS recommends sticking to these guidelines for optimal health and development. Sleep is when your child’s body and brain recharge, repair, and grow. 🧠✨

⏰ Tips for Encouraging Healthy Sleep Habits:
Create a calming bedtime routine – A regular wind-down routine helps signal that it’s time for sleep.

Limit screen time before bed – Avoid screens 1 hour before sleep to help your child’s body produce the right hormones for rest.

Make the sleep environment cosy – A dark, quiet, and cool room helps promote deep sleep.

Be mindful of naps – While naps are great, try to ensure they don’t affect night-time sleep.

Have you recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes?
You could join a new study and help to improve the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
People diagnosed with diabetes have an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer,
which has no obvious symptoms in the early stages, making it more difficult to
diagnose.
SAFE-D is a clinical study evaluating a new blood test to detect the very early signals of
pancreatic cancer in people with a recent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
If you’re aged 50-84 and have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the last 6 months ,
you may be eligible to take part in this ground-breaking research!
For more information and to register your interest, visit the SAFE-D website – www.safe-d.uk

Anaphylaxis: Be Ready, Act Fast 🌟

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within minutes. If you or your child has a history of severe allergies, being prepared truly matters.

💉 Always carry 2 adrenaline auto-injectors
Whether it’s an EpiPen, Jext, or Emerade (where available), make sure you have two devices with you at all times. A second dose may be needed if symptoms don’t improve after 5 minutes.

🕒 Check expiry dates regularly
Adrenaline auto-injectors lose effectiveness over time. Take a moment to check the sell-by/expiry date and request a replacement from your GP or pharmacy if it’s approaching expiry.

📏 Make sure you’re on the correct dose
Different devices come in adult and junior strengths. If you’re unsure which dose you or your child should be prescribed, please speak to one of our clinicians we’re here to help.

🚨 In an emergency:
1️⃣ Give the adrenaline auto-injector immediately
2️⃣ Call 999 and say “anaphylaxis”
3️⃣ Lie flat with legs raised (unless breathing is difficult—then sit up)
4️⃣ Use your second injector after 5 minutes if there’s no improvement
5️⃣ Stay in hospital for observation
Your preparedness can save a life.

If you need a review of your allergy action plan or prescriptions, contact the surgery. 💙
