Registering a Death in Scotland: What You Need to Know

When someone close to you passes away, knowing what to do next can feel overwhelming. One of the first steps is contacting the local registrar to let them know that the person has died. We’re here to help you understand what happens next.

🕊 How it works in Scotland

A death must be registered within 8 days.

Once you’ve contacted the registrar, they will arrange an appointment with you — this is usually carried out over the phone.

The doctor will send the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) directly to the registrar, who will then guide you through the registration process during your appointment.

📄 What you’ll receive
After the registration is complete, the registrar will issue:

The Certificate of Registration of Death (Form 14), which allows the funeral to proceed. This is usually sent directly to the nominated Funeral Director.

Copies of the Death Certificate, which are sent to the family if requested.

Funeral Service to take place on Thursday 16th April at 11am in Watchhill Chapel of Rest Annan thereafter to Annan Cemetery to which all friends are respectfully invited to attend. Family flowers only please.

Peacefully on 23rd March 2026 in DGRI, Alan aged 72 years.
Beloved Father, Grandad, Brother and Uncle.
He will be sadly missed by everyone.

Peacefully at home on Saturday 21st March 2026 after a short illness, Lorraine aged 76 years. Loving wife of John, much loved mam of Nicola and Natalie, mother in law of Kevin and Malcolm. A devoted nanna and great nanna, and also a treasured sister and sister in law.
Funeral service to take place on Monday 13th April at 11am in Watchhill Chapel of Rest Annan, thereafter to Annan Cemetery to which all friends are respectfully invited to attend. Family flowers only please, donations in lieu if desired in memory of Lorraine to the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK

Peacefully on Sunday 22nd February, at home surrounded by her family, Christine aged 62 years. A much loved wife, mum, granny and great granny.
Funeral service will take place on Tuesday 10th March at 1pm in Watchhill Chapel of Rest Annan, thereafter to Annan Cemetery to which all friends are respectfully invited to attend. Family flowers only please, donations in lieu if desired, to Lymphoma Cancer and MacMillan. At Christine's request, if you could wear a touch of purple that would be appreciated.

Funeral Director Karen popped along to Lydiafield Care Home in Annan, to hand in some biscuits and Juice for the residents. Whilst there she had a good catch up with Keith. Keith worked many years at K.D.Henderson as a Funeral Service Operative and it was lovely to see him doing well.
