“it’s Shoe time!”
At Theravet we are perfectionists about our water hygiene and quality. With all the rain and endless mud recently, it can make water management more challenging, as well as keeping our working spaces clean. Please can we kindly ask all our lovely clients to make sure their dogs are clean when they come for appointments. For our human clients we provide overshoes, but they won’t hold back wet mud on your own feet, so please feel free to bring a pair of clean, non slip shoes for entering the wet rooms. Oh and pray for sun! Thank you ☺️

Calling Scotland and beyond! Launching the first of our 2026 CPD events. All tickets are limited and more courses will be released throughout the year. This one focuses on Dachsunds and the spinal and orthopaedic conditions they can suffer from. We look at the breed, the conditions, the surgical and non surgical approaches and how we can both rehabilitate, and help prevent issues. For tickets and further information about our speakers:

Come and experience a CPD followed by time at the amazing Bowhouse complex - eat, relax, shop or take a stroll along the stunning Fife Coastal path - it’s CPD with a difference!

Say goodbye to wet, smelly fabric collars with our exciting new range of soft, strong biothane collars and leads. Hand made by Ellie at Fern and Raven and in stock for the first time in Scotland! Ellie is not only a dog owner herself, she is one of our lead team - working in hydrotherapy and rehab so her designs not only focus on practicality but also on comfort and safety for the wearer! They are fully waterproof, washable, wipeable and they dry super fast. Pop in to Theravet or phone/email Fife@theravet.com for colours, sizes and prices. We can post out if required.

This weekend we are following the stages of Ludo! One of our amazing feline patients. Ludo had a traumatic injury and it had to be resolved using a Femoral Head and Neck Excision (FHNE). This type of surgery is a salvage procedure for dogs and cats that removes the hip's "ball" (femoral head/neck). This alleviates pain and dysfunction from severe arthritis, fractures, or hip dysplasia. It works by eliminating bone to bone contact and instead the body creates a fibrous pseudoarthrosis (false joint). Physiotherapy is a very important part of recovery for these patients as it affects the quality of healing - maintaining elasticity and function while also providing tissue strength and support to the limb and pelvis. It is most suited to small/medium pets, though it can be performed on larger animals. It usually results in good, pain-free mobility if followed by a regular and well implemented physiotherapy plan. Cats can often be overlooked for physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, but as the next few posts will demonstrate- Ludo has proved cats can rehab well and can be super compliant patients!

A chilly but beautiful start to 2026 for us!
Please remember your dogs and cats towels and coats if they are hydrotherapy patients! For all our clients, take care on slippery surfaces or where the ground is frozen - we know dogs love zoomies in the snow but these can aggravate old injuries and cause new ones! Here’s to a healthy 2026.

This is Bert, a 5 year old Sealyham Terrier. Bert suffered an acute onset paraplegia with intact nociception and urinary and faecal incontinence.

Bert was conservatively managed for suspected T3-L3 myelopathy (eg disc extrusion) alongside veterinary medication and pain management.

It was suspected that Bert had experienced an intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE). An intervertebral disc extrusion (Hansen type I) is often due to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). This is degenerative condition which more
commonly affects certain breeds such as Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Beagles, Miniature Poodles or cross-breeds
(chondrodystrophic breeds), during which the nucleus pulposus (core) intervertebral disc experiences early-onset mineralisation,
becoming more brittle and prone to herniation. In cases where a disc herniation does occur, this can cause spinal cord contusion (bruising) sometimes with compression, leading to a range of clinical signs that is graded from grade 1 (spinal pain only) to grade 5 (no movement or pain sensation in affected limbs). On presentation, Bert was graded 4 by his neurologist at onset of his treatment and had dropped to a grade 3/2 some 4 months later.

Bert started with intensive physiotherapy sessions to assist with stimulation of the feet and limbs, compensatory muscle tension and to aid his attempts to stand and weight bear, we also allow time for recovery as far as possible of continence levels. Once this could be managed Bert was moved to the underwater treadmill with full therapist support and he was able to take his first steps to unassisted movement. The therapist works to guide correct movement and encourage correct limb positioning. Pool work was then used to assist with proprioceptive awareness and further strengthening.

Bert continues to grow stronger and is an amazing little patient. Well done Bert!
