This week is - a week that celebrates apprenticeships and the opportunities that they bring.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists website has some really helpful information about degree-level Speech and Language Therapy apprenticeships, but due to government funding, the speech and language apprenticeship is currently only available in England.

Next week it will be which is an annual event run by the charity Place2Be.

Many children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs have communication and interaction difficulties. Speech and language therapy (SLT) can play an important role in identifying and supporting these difficulties, helping to remove the barriers to communication.

At Eg Training Ltd, we use a variety of resources to give children and young people the opportunity to express their feelings, wants and needs. When used correctly and consistently, such resources can help to alleviate the stress and frustration that stems from those who find it difficult to express this information verbally.

In addition to speech and language therapy, organisations like Place2Be are available to provide wider support to children and young people by offering a variety of services for schools, parents and carers. This week is which is an annual celebration of the power of sharing stories. To link in with this, our SLT Leanne has been preparing story based resources for use in sessions with different clients.

Each session will access stories in different and versatile ways, with the aim of developing a variety of communication skills including:

▪ Vocabulary
▪ Turn-taking
▪ Requesting 'more' or 'finish'
▪ Accessing a switch to request 'more'

Alongside the sounds and rhythm used in the story telling, additional materials will be used to help to make the story come to life for example: using sensory objects to touch and feel, or symbols to match.

Each year, January 28th commemorates the date in 1958 when the Danish patent for the interlocking stud-and-tube brick was filed. Since then, it has had quite a journey with LEGO®-Based Therapy being developed in the early 2000s.

Lego has so many uses, and is great to use in speech and language therapy sessions. It can help improve social communication and language skills, it can help children learn turn-taking, shared attention, and problem-solving. Lego based play also fosters teamwork and confidence.

Recent research has shown that high screen use is leading to a decrease in vocabulary in toddlers thus harming speech and language development.

The World Health Organisation provides clear guidance on screen time for children:

▪️Under 2 years: No screen time is recommended.
▪️Ages 2 to 4 years: Limit screen time to no more than one hour per day.
▪️Ages 5 to 17 years: Screen time should not exceed two hours per day.
