If you missed our earlier post, then here's a little reminder about our story time event this Thursday (5th March).

Sharing books from an early age — even from birth or during pregnancy — helps build language skills, sparks imagination, and supports emotional development.

Reading with children isn’t just about stories; it’s about connection, curiosity, and creating positive experiences with books that nurture confidence, creativity, and communication skills. It’s never too early to enjoy a story. Listening, looking at pictures, and talking about books all help children grow as readers, and even a few minutes of book sharing each day can make a lasting difference.

Stories truly help little minds grow — join us this World Book Day to celebrate the joy of reading, imagination, and book sharing.

Happy Chinese New Year to all those who are celebrating!

'Traditions' is a lovely theme to use in speech and language sessions and this is what our Speech and Language Therapist Leanne has been working on recently with a client. For her next session, Leanne will be working on a range of activities around the theme of the Chinese New Year.

The client will read about Chinese New Year and answer/ take part in discussion around the associated literal, inference and reflective questions, to work on these skills to support the development of reading comprehension.

Leanne will encourage the client to look at three different people within a picture and discuss what each of them might think/ feel/ say/ do, in order to develop skills in perspective taking.

An image including food, decorations, and gifts will be used to work on categorising - the client will sort the items into categories such as food, festival creatures, decorations, gifts.

There are many communication activities that can be linked to all different types of traditions.

Tomorrow is Pancake Day and you may not realise this, but it creates lots of lovely opportunities for speech and language activities. Some of these are featured in the graphics but you can also work on:

🥞Instruction following
🥞Concepts such as mix, pour and flip
🥞Comparing
🥞Expressing preferences such as "I prefer strawberries to banana"
🥞Fine motor skills - used when mixing and weighing
🥞Blowing - this is great for breath control

Communication skills take practise, just like making pancakes. Remember that mistakes will happen when you make pancakes, and they don't always land perfectly when you flip them!

We love this graphic - it serves as a reminder to those of us supporting clients using AAC, that progress is a nurtured journey. It is absolutely about access, confidence, and connection. Thank you AAC Institute for sharing 🙌

AAC progress isn’t about using the “right words at the right time.” It's not about answering questions or giving the right answers.
It’s about access, confidence, and connection often in quiet, easy-to-miss ways.

Progress can look like:
• more attempts
• longer pauses before responding
• exploring new buttons
• staying engaged just a little longer

It’s not linear. It’s not scripted.

But it’s real. And it matters. 💛

This week is - a week that celebrates apprenticeships and the opportunities that they bring.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists website has some really helpful information about degree-level Speech and Language Therapy apprenticeships, but due to government funding, the speech and language apprenticeship is currently only available in England.

Next week it will be which is an annual event run by the charity Place2Be.

Many children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs have communication and interaction difficulties. Speech and language therapy (SLT) can play an important role in identifying and supporting these difficulties, helping to remove the barriers to communication.

At Eg Training Ltd, we use a variety of resources to give children and young people the opportunity to express their feelings, wants and needs. When used correctly and consistently, such resources can help to alleviate the stress and frustration that stems from those who find it difficult to express this information verbally.

In addition to speech and language therapy, organisations like Place2Be are available to provide wider support to children and young people by offering a variety of services for schools, parents and carers.
