This week I’ve visited Blackburn, Liverpool (several times) The Eden Valley, County Louth & Staffordshire.
All virtually of course, but a most fascinating week of research, did you know In 1801 12% of Liverpool’s population lived in cellars?
I also researched Fred Duxbury, my Great Grandfather’s cousin, who I discovered was killed in action at Gallipoli.

Don’t forget to fill in your census today. In 150 years time family researchers will be looking you up, so try and be accurate and not too clever with your answers unlike one Catherine Cudney 140 years ago, whose occupation is described as ‘Does as she pleases!’

Asking for opinions..
My Great Great Grandfather William Hesmondhalgh was an iron foundry foreman for Blackburn firm Yates & Thom.
Found a group photo, would you say that this is the same man as the family photos I have?

Mitchell and Kenyon were based in Blackburn and shot the most amazing films. You can’t stop watching. Many of these young men were to go to war in 1914-18.

New technology is allowing us now to transform those old photos of our ancestors into something we never imagined before. This is my Gran. What do you think? Should we leave the photos as they are, or bring them to life?

My 3rd Great Grandfather Henry Valentine Wright was born this day 207 years ago in Norwich. He was a harness maker and saddler, living in Northumberland St in the City. Using census returns, directories and old maps, I can now picture where he lived and what sort of life he had with his wife Sarah and 9 children.

I started researching the Warcop War Memorial 6 years ago. I’ve returned to it again to finish off some finer details. It’s amazing how these men are connected in some way and the the residents of this Village are still connected to the names on this memorial.

1901 in the village of Murton, Appleby, two boys aged 4 living next door to each other. On the 1st July 1916, both boys, now young men, are killed in action on the first day of the Somme.
William Foster Atkinson & Joseph Stanley Scrivens being friends, joined the 11th Border Regiment, the Lonsdale Pals Battalion. The Battalion was devastated in the first few days of the Battle, with many men losing their lives from the Eden Valley.
William is buried in the Lonsdale Cemetery in Authuille. Stanley has his name on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing of the Somme.
This is just one story of many.
We will remember them.

Not only Friendship Farm, but Cuddling Hole. What a friendly place the Eden Valley is 😁

While researching the 1939 register in Appleby I came across artist Rueben Ward Binks who lived in Bongate.
Binks was recognised as the leading artist of his day in canine portraiture. He painted dogs for three generations of the British Royal family, and among his patrons were four successive monarchs.
You better check your attics Appleby folks, just in case one of his paintings was given to your relatives, because they’re fetching quite a good price at auction!
Binks died in 1950.
