One of our clients Jordan could not have put this any better. It’s a graft for sure.
The many masks of a self-employed business owner 🫠 Inspired by my latest conversation with Kelly at Angus Bike Chain
The trade that led you to opening your business, mine is dog training, first and foremost. That’s the passion. That’s the reason it all started.
But what people don’t always see is everything else that comes with it…
Accountant
Learning how to deal with HMRC, tracking every receipt, figuring out software like Excel or QuickBooks. You’re too busy to do it all… but not quite busy enough to justify paying someone else to do it for you.
Social media creator
Because if you’re not online, do you even exist? 😅 Trying to keep up with algorithms, create content people connect with, and stay consistent… it’s a full job in itself. And honestly? I’m still learning every day.
Maintenance / DIY / handy person
Fixing things, building things, figuring things out, all to keep costs down. It saves money, but finding the time? That’s another story.
Receptionist
Answering messages, booking clients, having calls, guiding people to the right service. This usually happens at home… when you’re meant to be switched off.
Customer service rep
Replying to every enquiry, reassuring nervous owners, handling last-minute changes, all while trying to give every single person a great experience.
Marketer
Planning offers, thinking about how to stand out, trying to grow, even when you’re exhausted.
And somewhere in between all of that… you’re still the one actually doing the job you love.
Being self-employed isn’t just one role. It’s all of them.
So if you’re running your own business -
this is your reminder:
You’re doing more than you probably give yourself credit for.
And if you support a small business? Just know… there’s a whole lot going on behind the scenes that you don’t always see 🧡
