The Dalitso Project

The Dalitso Project Working hand in hand to beat poverty through orphan care, education, food programs, vocational training, health care and house building in Malawi.

The Dalitso Project is a registered Scottish charity SC046514 The Dalitso Project is a Christian based charity working in partnership with Aquaid Lifeline to provide orphan care, education, vocational training, food programs and house building for the poorest of the poor in Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. Dalitso means ‘blessing’ in Chichewa, the language of Malawi. As a charity we aim to bless the people of Malawi but have found that they bless us in return. The groups involvement in Malawi began in 2007 when a group of 7 young people visited Namisu orphan school and village in the south of Malawi and got to see the tough conditions children were living in. With this they decided to fund the building and running of 2 daycare centres and 2 residences for the most at risk young people. These are based in the Thyolo and Kambilonjo regions. Each of these centres are up and running and care for 300 plus children, providing nursery care, additional education (primary schools are only open in the mornings), food and training/further education for the older young people. Since then 2 further trips of 15 have visited the projects, 2 gap students and now a yearly trip ensures that developments of these projects continue. In Kambilonjo which is a very hard to reach, mountainous region of Malawi on the Mozambique border, a health clinic has been built in partnership with the local government. This will mean that the children in our centres and the local community have access to medical care on their doorstep instead of having to take the 1 hour journey on the back of a truck down a very bumpy and often dangerous road like before. To raise money to fund these main projects we run regular fundraisers and a Sponsor Child program. More information of upcoming events and how to get involved in the Sponsor program is available regularly on the main page.

In her message, Christina reflects on the past year and thanks the Dalitso team — meaning everyone who supports the work, in many different ways.

Thank you for being part of Dalitso. 💚

🎄 Christmas Clothes Appeal – Another bonus Christmas post as we just had to share!

We’re now at 426 outfits funded — that’s 96% of our target of 440! 🎉

We’re just 14 outfits away from providing two outfits for every child.

At £25 per outfit, that’s only £350 left to go. WOW!!

It’s been brilliant to watch the tracker fill up over Advent — and we can’t wait to see the outfits in real life when they’re worn and handed out. 💚

🏥 Maternity Unit Update

Alongside our Advent posts, we wanted to share an update from Kambilonjo, where work continues on the maternity unit.

These photos (sent this morning!) show recent progress as the walls continue to take shape. Each stage brings us closer to a facility that will provide safer care for mothers and babies in the local community.

We’ll continue to share updates as the build progresses.

🎄 Advent Countdown – Social Work Students

Today’s Advent post features Caroline, Erick, Yamikani, Innocent and Bertha — the Social Work students we shared about back in August.

This is our second year of having Social Work students involved at the centre. In the video, Erick speaks about what they’ve been working on during their placement with us from August through to November.

Since our visit in October, they’ve continued with the work already underway, set up a new group for older girls, and worked with some of our secondary school finishers on career options.

The students have also completed all of the sponsor reports, which will be shared in the new year.

We’re grateful for all the commitment and effort they showed throughout their placement.

The Mary Spink skills centre is a vocational training school where our young people can learn manual skills followed by some support in getting into employment or setting up small businesses. We want to ensure that all of our young people leave our schemes with the ability to provide for themselves and their families!

You can get involved in sponsoring young people through vocational training- and transforming a future. Get in touch for more details!

On the final Friday of our October trip to Malawi, the children and staff gathered as they do every week — for choirs and singing.

We joined them on that last full day at Thyolo, and what began as the usual Friday gathering soon turned into singing and dancing.

Take a moment to watch the dance moves, the smiling faces and the atmosphere created by our friends in Malawi. It’s a simple snapshot of life at the centre and a reminder of what makes it such a positive place to be.
