Sometimes, a mask doesn't pass the test. This is mainly due to the mask being not fit for purpose or because the wearer's features have changed and the mask is no longer tight fitting. Should this be the case, we can advise on alternative makes and models.

We carry out qualitative and quantitative face fit tests in accordance with HSE INDG479. Both tests take around 20 minutes to complete and you receive an instant result as to whether the mask has passed and therefore provides adequate protection.

The main purpose of face fit testing is to ensure that there is good contact between the wearer's skin and the seal of the face piece. However, our tests also check that the wearer knows how to put on the mask correctly, to ensure the right protection.

We sometimes get asked if the CE mark on a mask is enough proof that it's suitable and will protect the wearer. All the CE marking does is confirm that the mask was designed and tested to meet the minimum legal requirements. It does not make it automatically suitable for a task so still needs to go through a suitability check by the employer before use.

Onboarding new team members that wear RPE as part of their new roles? We find that face fit testing is best done at the induction and onboarding stage, to ensure workers are protected from the start. We then recommend re-testing every 2 years unless there are changes to the wearer's facial features.

It matters where and how you store your RPE! RPE left lying around in dirty areas increases the risk of contamination on the inside of the facepiece, and parts deteriorating from exposure to dirt, solvents, vapours, oil, UV light and sunlight.
