It was great to be in Germany for the 20 year anniversary of the International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic (IAVC). I completed my initial animal chiropractic training here in 2009 and have been coming back regularly ever since and I have been teaching for them for over 12 years in Germany and England and even once in New Zealand. It was so lovely to take Theo over to meet everyone and have the chance to do a lecture on neurology and chiropractic research. Such a great group of people and I always learn so much from all my colleagues on every trip. Can’t wait for the next 10 years!

What an amazing result for Tom and Walshy!! I’ve been lucky enough to know Walshy since he was a foal and have been treating him since before he was broken. It makes a result like this even more special! There is such a great team behind this horse, including his owners. What an absolute superstar, and still only 11. I can’t wait to see what the future holds! (Also little did I know that when Tom was helping me grooming at burghley 14 years ago he would go on to be second at his first attempt there! I must be getting old!)

It’s so amazing now shows are back on and I can go along and treat the horses out and about!! It’s certainly a very busy time at the moment with lovely horses like Del and others and Hartpury and helping get another very special horse ready for the Olympics.
It’s such a treat being involved in all these teams and so lovely to see results like a Fiona’s at hartpury. I’ve been treating Fiona’s horses for 8 years now and it’s a great team to be a part of!

Best part of my job is I get to be involved in some really special teams, the horses, riders and grooms become great friends. It’s great to see the horses improve and evolve over years and very special when they compete at the highest level. So nice now everyone is back out competing and see all those wonderful horses that I see in their stables out competing with the best!

Fortunately when treating animals, social distancing from humans is very easy. Good job the same rule doesn’t apply to horses and dogs! Dreamy and Bertie don’t understand the 2M rule!

I had such a good weekend at the British Chiropractic Association Conference with the IAVC. It was a great opportunity to meet lots of other chiropractors and introduce animal chiropractic. We had a great workshop and were able to do and lecture and a dog demonstration!

Today is celebrating working animals past and present across the world. Most of my equine patients live a very privileged life in the UK! In these photos are some of the working draft horses that I love treating. These guys work hard doing log pulling and bracken rolling. We wouldn’t have achieved what humans have achieved without the efforts of horses throughout history and there are still many horses working hard throughout the world so it’s good to acknowledge them

Posture versus Conformation
These photos follow a pony that I treated in January 2018 and again in December 2018. This pony was rising 11 last January, (riding 12 now) and is used for low level pony club activities. Unlike humans horses do not have a curve in their lower back but occasionally we see there is a slight conformational fault and they do display this curve (called a Lumber lordosis). Whilst we cannot change the conformation, with Chiropractic you can hugely improve the posture and therefore improve the function of the horse/ pony’s spine. The first photo was taken before the first Chiropractic treatment in Jan 2018. The second photo was taken immediately after the first treatment. The third photo is immediately after the second treatment 11 months later. This is what we see all the time with chiropractic, you get and immediate improvement, which can be seen in the posture and felt when next ridden, but importantly they continue to improve over time as they move more correctly and then are able to use and build the correct muscles. The last two photos are close ups before first treatment and immediately after second treatment. I’m really happy with this pony’s progress, he and his young rider continue great fun at pony club doing all kinds of activities.

The FEI now requires you to be registered with them to treat horses at FEI competitions so I’ve applied and now I’m a ‘Permitted Equine Therapist’ Another thing to add to the list! I think it’s great as they are ensuing that everyone working at FEI events is suitably qualified.
