"It would have been a real loss had that facade been lost altogether, it would have been a great detriment to this quarter of the town, and the street itself is one of the most authentic Victorian terraced streets that you can think of. It is great to have it preserved, and it is wonderful that [the work done] will give it that longevity."

šŸ  Ensuring that heritage, authenticity and conservation goes hand in hand with energy efficiency and warmth, Westdale's work in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire has delighted one particular neighbour - the museum which marks the birthplace of famous English novelist D.H. Lawrence. 😊

Adrian Bishop, MD of Westdale Midlands Ltd, recently attended a roundtable event organised by Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and hosted by Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change. It was a highly informative session that explored how local businesses are faring and then broadened the discussion to issues at a national level.

It was rewarding to hear that Ed is a supporter of fabric first insulation measures, and we hope we addressed the comments on affordability by highlighting that this investment delivers value on many levels and that the payback extends far beyond the financial benefits of reducing residents’ and homeowners’ bills. These include:

- Healthier homes for residents
- Reduced strain on the NHS
- Improved academic results as children have warm, safe places to study
- Better air quality
- Lower energy consumption and bills for residents
- Reduced property maintenance costs for social housing landlords
- Less mental health anxiety around paying bills
- Rejuvenated neighbourhoods becoming more desirable places to live
- Greater community pride as residents see visible improvements and recognise the investment in their wellbeing
- Prevention and eradication of mould and damp

These conversations remind us how important it is to keep pushing for solutions that benefit people and communities.

Mr Miliband, also the MP for Doncaster North, posted on Facebook: ā€œI really enjoyed taking part in the Doncaster Chamber roundtable.

"It was great to hear directly from local businesses on the issues that matter most to them - from the Budget, to skills, innovation and the local economy.

"Conversations like these are essential in making sure the voices of Doncaster's business community are heard, and I'm grateful to everyone who took the time to attend and contribute."

There is a benefit to saving houses, not merely demolishing them.

Westdale's work in transforming homes in and around a conservation area in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire - close to the birthplace of famous English novelist D.H. Lawrence - has not only lifted the appearance of the properties, but also changed the lives of people for the better.

"Showing what's possible when we put communities first..."

"We decided to improve the housing stock in the area, to improve the thermal performance of the buildings and improve the comfort of the houses, as well as reduce their energy bills. The important thing to understand here is that these houses were built in Victorian times and it is unfair that residents live in Victorian standards...we need to get them into modern standards."

šŸ Our work [courtesy of our excellent Westdale North LTD team) in transforming homes in and around a conservation area in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire - close to the birthplace of famous English novelist D.H. Lawrence - has not only lifted the appearance of the properties, by utilising Structherm Limited's superb Artbrick, but also changed the lives of people for the better.

Enjoy the video. Clearly there is a benefit to saving houses, not merely demolishing them. Refurbishing them so they can be fit for the future. Regenerating them and giving them a new lease of life, so they can in turn provide a new lease of life for residents, boosting wellbeing and prosperity.

With the existing ECO4 scheme set to end in March 2026 (as announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves in the Autumn Budget), the Government's much-anticipated Warm Home Plan has come sharply into focus.

And yet the housing, construction and energy sectors are all still waiting on many key details of the plan to be announced.

Certain components of the plan are known, but other specific details have yet to be released.

The government has committed £13.2 billion in funding for the overall Warm Homes Plan over the current Parliament (2025/26 to 2029/30), which will be delivered through several schemes; the Warm Homes: Local Grant, the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) and the Warm Home Discount Scheme:

There is no doubt that the Warm Homes Plan is taking on increasing significance. It will define government strategy for upgrading properties, decarbonising home heating and tackling fuel poverty.

So it is important that the powers-that-be release the full plan - every detail - as soon as they can, in order for everyone to fully prepare, and to provide long-term vision, clarity, and certainty for the sector to deliver home energy efficiency upgrades effectively.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves yesterday announced that the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) would end in March 2026.

ECO is a government-backed energy efficiency scheme designed to tackle fuel poverty in Great Britain and help reduce carbon emissions. It is funded by the big six energy companies.

But in yesterday's Autumn Budget, the Chancellor confirmed that the current scheme, ECO4, would end on March 31st next year, 31 March 2026 without a direct replacement scheme to follow it on.

Instead, some of the funding that was earmarked for ECO is now to go into removing around £150 of costs on average from household energy bills from April next year.

Those unhappy with the decision to end the ECO scheme say that potentially up to one million households will now miss out on the opportunity to insulate their properties in the next four years.

The Chancellor has stated that the Government will provide an additional £1.5 billion capital investment to tackle fuel poverty through their much-touted Warm Homes Plan, which is in addition to the £13.2 billion of funding that was declared at the Government's 2025 Spending Review.

What are your thoughts on the declared ending of ECO?

26/11/2025

On it bears repeating (again and again) the need to help the millions of UK households who are living in fuel poverty.

Those hard-hit, struggling homeowners appear to be fighting a losing battle in dealing with their fuel/energy bills.

Eat or heat is still at the forefront of their minds - as winter gets a grip. That's why it is even more vital to ensure that the country's recognised ā€˜fuel-poor homes’ are brought up to a reasonable standard of energy efficiency.

Here at Westdale we are committed to helping tackle fuel poverty by providing better home insulation and other key efficiency solutions.
