Ahhhh… Spring is here… or is it? The weather (and the world) is a bit unstable these days as we move into Spring. In Eastern Medicine, Spring is represented by Wood, and it is the season of the Liver. It is a time when our Ki, or energy, moves outwards and upwards. While winter was a time for rest and storage, Spring is a time for activity and movement- for our Ki to move out into our tendons and muscles.
Particularly if we had a busy Winter, Spring is the time when problems start to show up, especially musculoskeletal issues such as low back pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, general muscle soreness, and tendonitis, as well as headaches, insomnia, hay fever, eye problems, depression, tiredness, and fatigue.
Gentle exercises and some extra sleep can be very beneficial at this time. In addition, acupuncture and moxibustion can help with these issues, as they serve to balance the body, promote health, and ward off disease (including muscle aches and pains).
