🎅 Care & Carers at the Haddenham Santa Dash 2025 🎄

This year, we're excited to be part of the Haddenham Santa Dash — a brilliant community event supporting the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity.

For us, it’s more than just a festive run. It’s a moment to stand alongside our community, celebrate together, and support a cause that makes a real difference to families across Buckinghamshire.

A huge thank-you to our amazing team memebers and their family members who are taking part — bringing their energy, compassion and Christmas spirit to the route. ❤️

Today, we remember.
On this Remembrance Day, we honour all those who served, sacrificed, and stood for the values we hold dear — courage, compassion, and community.
At Care & Carers, we reflect on their legacy and the responsibility we share to care for others with the same spirit of service.
Lest we forget!

Dr Aggrey Burke (born 1943)

We are celebrating Dr Aggrey Burke, a pioneering psychiatrist and one of the most influential figures in Black British medical history.

Born in Jamaica in 1943, Dr Burke moved to Britain to study medicine and went on to become the first Black British consultant psychiatrist in the NHS. His ground breaking work helped challenge inequalities in mental health and improve how services respond to the needs of diverse communities.

Dr Burke later chaired the Transcultural Psychiatry Society, leading efforts to understand how culture, race and identity influence mental health. He spoke openly about discrimination within healthcare and worked tirelessly to make mental health care more inclusive, respectful and effective for everyone.

Why this still matters today:
Dr Aggrey Burke’s legacy continues to inspire change in both health and social care. His dedication to equality and his advocacy for cultural awareness remind us that compassion, understanding and representation are essential to truly person centred care.

Nola Ishmael (born 1943)

We are celebrating Nola Ishmael, a trailblazing nurse, leader and mentor who helped open doors for future generations in British healthcare.

Originally from Barbados, Nola moved to Britain in the 1960s to train as a nurse during a time when the National Health Service was still young and rapidly growing. Her dedication, skill and leadership soon set her apart, and she went on to become the first Black director of nursing in London, a remarkable achievement that reflected both her professionalism and her deep commitment to compassionate care.

Nola was later awarded an OBE for her outstanding service to nursing and her work supporting others in their professional development. Throughout her career, she championed equality and empowerment, mentoring countless nurses and carers to believe in their abilities and strive for excellence.

Why this still matters today:
Nola Ishmael’s story reminds us that strong leadership and inclusivity go hand in hand. Her example shows how compassion, courage and representation can help shape better care for everyone.

Louise Da Cocodia (1934 – 2008)

We are celebrating Louise Da Cocodia, a pioneering nurse and community leader who helped shape the values of equality and inclusion that remain central to health and social care today.

Born in Jamaica, Louise moved to Britain in 1955 as part of the Windrush generation to train as a nurse in the newly formed National Health Service. Despite facing discrimination, her determination and professionalism led her to become the first Black senior nursing officer in Manchester during the 1960s, an inspiring achievement at a time of major social change.

Beyond her nursing career, Louise worked tirelessly to improve race relations and community care. She helped establish organisations that supported families, promoted fairness and encouraged young people from minority backgrounds to enter healthcare. Her work left a lasting legacy of compassion, resilience and leadership.

Why this still matters today:
Louise Da Cocodia’s story reminds us that progress in care is built on equality, respect and courage. Her example continues to inspire a more inclusive and compassionate approach to caring for others.

“If I see a wrong or an injustice, I cannot rest until I’ve set it right.”
— Dr Harold Moody

Born in Jamaica in 1882, Dr Harold Moody moved to Britain to study medicine and went on to dedicate his life to fighting racial inequality in both healthcare and the workplace. As a physician, he cared deeply for people from all walks of life, and as a campaigner, he worked tirelessly to ensure fairness, dignity and opportunity for all.

His legacy reminds us that equality is not an ideal but an ongoing responsibility.

At Care & Carers, we share Dr Moody’s belief that truly inclusive care begins with respect, for every person we support, employ and work alongside.

Black History Month Spotlight: Annie Brewster (1858 – 1902)

We are celebrating Annie Brewster, one of Britain’s first Black nurses and a true pioneer of compassionate care.

Originally from Saint Vincent, Annie moved to London and trained at the London Hospital in Whitechapel, where she became nurse in charge of the ophthalmic ward in 1888. She was known for her calm and caring nature, providing comfort and skilled support to patients who were losing their sight. Her professionalism and warmth made her deeply respected by both patients and colleagues.

Why this still matters today:
Annie’s story reminds us that care is about more than medical skill. It is about compassion, patience and dignity. Her legacy continues to inspire carers and healthcare professionals to deliver person centred support that changes lives.

What we offer!

We’re here to ease the burden of care-giving on families. Trust us! We do not need thanks. We seek rewards in the smile and trust of people we support!

We believe care should be given with care and skill. Being a carer is not for the faint-hearted. Carers deal with life and emotions. Yes, caring is a demanding role, but it is highly rewarding.

Supporting highly vulnerable people and empowering them to maintain their independence are at the heart of what our carers provide.
