🌟 Osteopathy and the Power of the Bio Psychosocial Approach to Musculoskeletal Pain🌟

Osteopathy uses the biopsychosocial approach to musculoskeletal issues such as back, neck and joint pain.  What does this mean? 🤔

🔍 The bio psychosocial approach looks beyond just the physical symptoms of musculoskeletal issues to understand the full “body story”. It considers three key aspects:
1️⃣ Biological factors (like anatomy, injury and movement habits),
2️⃣ Psychological factors (such as stress and coping mechanisms), and
3️⃣ Social factors (like support networks and environment).

💡 **Why is it so effective?**:
1️⃣ **Holistic Understanding**: By considering all aspects of a person’s health, we get a complete picture and can target the root causes, not just immediate symptoms.
2️⃣ **Personalised Care**: Everyone is unique. This approach tailors treatments to each individual’s specific needs, leading to better outcomes.
3️⃣ **Comprehensive Treatment**: This approach allows us to build a treatment plan that addresses a wide range of issues contributing to pain or disfunction.
4️⃣ **Preventive Focus**: By addressing psychological and social factors, we’re not just fixing problems—we’re helping to prevent them reoccurring.
5️⃣ **Happy Patients, Better Results**: Patients feel heard and seen as individuals with this approach and so and see positive results! 🎉

Everyone’s experience of pain is unique but the causes of pain can be classified in different ways. People often have pain that is a mix of different types. Nociceptive pain has origins in  threat, injury or damage to tissue, nociplastic pain is caused by changes to the part of our nervous system that tells our brain about the state of our body, central and peripheral neuropathic pain is the result of lesions or disease of the somatosensory nervous system (IASP, 2021). Understanding more about the type of pain you’re experiencing helps create effective strategies for recovery. Know your enemy!

Has working from home got you (or your back or neck) feeling in a funk? Neck and lower back pain worsened in over 50% of those working from home during COVID-19 according to a recent study (Moretti et al, 2020). A badly set up workspace, reduced movement, less social interaction and more stress from juggling work and homelife in the same place may all contribute to back and neck pain. Osteopathy can help with these conditions and get you back on the right track so you can focus on the up sides of working from home. ,

Thank you, , for such a brilliant day out! The Wave centre is involved in “blue health” research which shows spending time in or near water is good for our mental and physical wellbeing. I certainly felt brilliant after my surf lesson and loved that makes this sport more accessible (and that the founder of The Wave was an osteopath!)

So nice to be able to play tennis again. When playing sports, it’s important to be able to move your body optimally to avoid injuries. I can really feel, for example, how the spinal twisting involved in my yoga practice brings benefit to me on the tennis court. If pain or restrictions in your body are stopping you from playing the sports you love or from trying something new, osteopathy can help.

Last year I joined Oxford Boxing Academy. I think of myself as a pretty peaceful person but there is something about the boxing that is such an amazing stress buster, it’s had me returning each week. I also love the skipping. In my head, I’m skipping a lot faster than the reality this video shows but hey-ho! Here’s to new year exercise regimes that last past January. Also, if you feel that pain or discomfort is holding you back from trying something new, please get in touch. # exercise
