New mothers. Please be kind to yourselves.

We’re sold this idea that you have a baby and immediately become a glowing beacon of maternal love. And sometimes, yes, that happens and it's bloody lovely.

But oftentimes mothers look at their baby and feel… nothing... or panic, or rage, or numbness, or “what on earth have I done?!”

And then on top of that, there's the guilt, because apparently everyone else is floating around in a cloud of oxytocin and muslins.

But a traumatic birth can leave your nervous system in survival mode and
bonding doesn’t always arrive on cue, wearing a soft-focus cardigan.

Sometimes it comes slowly. Sometimes it needs safety first, or rest.

Not instantly bonding with your baby does not make you a bad parent. It makes you a human being who may have been through something enormous. Be gentle with yourself.
