Meet Bertie ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

This superstar is always go go go and the only thing that slows him down for a physio appointment is squeezy cheese! Bertie had surgery to help stabilise his luxating patella last year. Even though his stifle is stable, he still hops occasionally and needs reminding that he has 4 legs and how to use them all.

Our physio sessions focus on reducing secondary tension through Bertie's shoulders and back, and focus on exercises to strengthen his back legs and improve his flexibility. We also do some exercises to help his gait patterning to encourage him to use his legs more functionally.

This is so true! Many of the exercises I set owners to do with their dogs are very simple, functional exercises but they are so effective at restoring function, improving strength and flexibility and helping address muscle asymmetries. I use Conditioning Your Canine to help give owners a clear idea of what they are trying to achieve along with helpful tips and tricks.

Get in contact if you want to know more about canine conditioning exercises and how they could help your dog!

Standing in a square stand, in good form, on foot targets with light baited head movements left and right...doesn't look like much, but this is a hugely effective and deceptively difficult conditioning exercise, which has a wide range of benefits!

Conditioning exercises don't have to be complicated, or look fancy, to be very effective and often very challenging for a dog's musculoskeletal and proprioceptive systems.

Many of the exercises on Conditioning Your Canine are simple and can be done with no or little equipment, however they are all based on functional movement patterns, consent and reward-based training methodologies and are very powerful exercises which achieve great results.

Meet Pip ๐Ÿถ Swipe to see him rocking all the best Christmas jumpers! ๐ŸŽ„

I met Pip 3 months ago to help with his post op recovery from IVDD, he had lost the use of his back legs due to multiple disk protrusions and extrusion.

With the support of his dedicated owner, his vets, regular hydrotherapy at and physiotherapy, Pip is coming on leaps and bounds!

The function of his legs have massively improved and are gaining muscle, his reflexes are getting stronger and his foot placement is so much better. He is such a happy chap and improving everytime I see him! Today he had a little snooze next to his favourite toy during his massage.

โญ Jolly Jura's Active Advent starting TOMORROW!!๐ŸŽ„

Everyday between now and Christmas, I will be posting a different exercise to help keep your dog active during December.

With the weather a bit dark and miserable outside, these exercises will be perfect to do at home using objects you find around the house. I will include some tips and tricks, different levels of difficulty and ways to incorporate them into your walks too!

Make sure to send us your videos and pictures of your Jolly animals doing their exercises!

Meet the lovely Teddy! Check out his before, during and after physio pictures ๐Ÿ˜‚

I've been seeing Teddy for a few months now to help with hip and back pain. He's much happier when he's comfortable, and he has taught me a great deal about the link between pain and behaviour.

If your dogs behaviour changes, they may be trying to tell you their in pain. Make sure you listen and get your dog checked out by a vet.

The Pain Cycle

Pain can become a never ending, downward spiral if it's not addressed and managed. A small injury, a slight discomfort, a sore joint or a lameness can escalate to affect the movement and function of the whole body.

Your dogs vet, physio, hydro and other members of your dogs team can help to interrupt and slow down this downward cycle by addressing each of the aspects of the pain cycle.

Physiotherapy can help reduce pain and inflammation, reduce muscle guarding, improve range of motion, assess and help improve altered gait, utilise exercises to prevent further muscle loss and improve overall function.

It is important to consult your vet ASAP if you think your dog is in pain, they will be able to help find the right pain management plan for your dog.

Meet Cleo!

I have been seeing this lovely little girl to help with her post-op recovery from a femoral head and neck excision (removal of the 'ball' from the 'ball and socket' joint of the hip).

Physiotherapy is keeping her shoulders, back and other hind leg comfortable, helping build the muscles in her affected leg and improving its function. She's doing really well and is gradually gaining strength, with the help of squeezy cheese ๐Ÿ’ช looking super cute with her new haircut too!

๐Ÿ’ชCanine strength and conditioning involves the combination of appropriate active exercise and specific functional exercises to improve your dogs strength, fitness, coordination and balance.

๐Ÿคธโ€โ™€๏ธJust as in human sports, this cross-training approach provides your dog with better physical preparation for activity or sports and therefore helps to prevents injuries.

๐Ÿถ It's great for ALL dogs, not just working or sports dogs! It doesn't have to involve expensive equipment, you can utilise things you find on your walk or objects at home.

โœ… These exercises can be added into your dogs daily routine. We incorporate exercises into Jura's walk, during her cool down and when we get back.

๐Ÿ• Strength and conditioning will often consist of a warm up, active exercise, targeted exercises and tricks training, specific stretches and a cool down.

๐Ÿฉ Have a chat with your vet physio about appropriate exercises for your dogs age, breed, activity levels, sport and where to start.
