Until We Meet Again.....❣️

It is with huge sadness and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Podiatry services at the Gait Lodge from today, after over twenty years of being in the lovely grounds of Galgorm Castle and Galgorm Golf Course.
In spite of surviving two rounds of recession, local issues in business and COVID, a national lack of Podiatrists and availability of staffing has meant we have finally had to give in to the greater powers and consolidate services at our sister clinic in Ballyclare ().
Staff and management at the Gait Lodge would like to say thankyou so, so much to all of our faithful followers, past and present, and we hope we may meet you again very soon in our Ballyclare premises.....

Wishing You All A Happy Easter !!

Earthing (AKA grounding) refers to contact with the Earth’s surface electrons by walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors. When bare feet touch the earth they come in contact with negative ions, researchers arguing they have a healing anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Emerging scientific research supports the concept that the Earth’s electrons induce multiple physiological changes of clinical significance- reduced pain, better sleep, a shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic tone in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and an anti-clotting effect. The research, along with many anecdotal reports, is presented in a new book entitled Earthing. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3265077/)

So- IS IT OKAY TO WALK BAREFOOT?
Yes- more than okay.

BEING BAREFOOT HELPS DEVELOP THE FINE MOTOR MUSCLES IN THE FEET
Walking barefoot can help develop/ maintain an appropriate range of motion in the foot and ankle joints and is a great way to strengthen and maintain full function of your feet. Strong feet and leg muscles can also help support the back to reduce back pain in both children and older adults.

WALKING BAREFOOT CAN HELP IMPROVE KINESTHETIC AWARENESS
Going barefoot can help improve kinesthetic awareness- the knowledge of where our body is in space and how we move (also known as muscle memory)…Kinesthetic awareness, proprioception, and the other sensory systems of the body all work together to help us move properly from the inside and from the outside of the body.

IT CAN ALSO HELP IMPROVE PROPRIOCEPTION…
Proprioception is the sense of the relative position of body parts in relation to the other parts of the body and provides us with information about our joint and muscle sensations.

….AND HELP THE BRAIN AND THE SENSORY SYSTEMS OF THE FEET AND BODY DEVELOP/ BE MAINTAINED PROPERLY.
Feeling the earth beneath your feet allows development of the somatosensory, proprioceptive, and vestibular sensory systems in ways that are not possible with shoes on. All three of these systems in the body are benefited by walking barefoot outside and all work together to improve the overall health of body and mind.

Key message? GET YOUR FEET OUT- AND GET GROUNDED 🙂

Sometimes we need to 'listen' to our body, especially our feet..

Did you know that...
-A quarter of our bones are located in our feet (26)
-Our feet have the most nerve endings in the body (so the most ticklish - or painful!)
-We have around 250,000 sweat glands in our feet which secrete half a pint of moisture daily
-Other health issues can be recognised early by a Podiatrist through your feet, including diabetes, nerve and circulatory conditions and arthritis
-The average adult takes 4,000 to 6,000 steps per day

Our feet take a lot of punishment, so lets keep them healthy.

****** UPDATE 2021 ******

To reassure all our patients old & new, we are still able to see you during continued lockdown. As healthcare workers, ALL practitioners have had their first vaccinations against Covid-19, and we know that lots of our older patients have had theirs too. This is great news as hopefully the world slowly starts to become a safer place again.

At our clinic we work hard to ensure we areas Covid-safe as possible for our patients, We get through copious quantities of PPE and patient appointments are scheduled to ensure adequate social distancing.Being safe for our patients isnt new to us- as HCPC registered PodiatristS we are regulated according to set standards to ensure public safety. This involves daily routines regarding clinic preparation, instrument sterilisation, and maintenance of clinical standards, so you are assured that you are in safe hands and in a safe place for your foot-related problems to be resolved.
