It’s less than two weeks to go until this year’s Festival, so what better time to look back to when Ben bumped into the legend that is Bob Champion (Grand National-winning jockey, 1981) at the Windsor Horse Show.

Bob gave Ben some valuable insight on how racehorse farriery has changed over the years...

Have you ever seen a grinder in the back of your farrier’s van and wondered what it’s used for?

Ben’s on hand for little demonstration of how and why they are used.

Watch and learn!

Imagine how unbalanced you would be wearing one heeled shoe and one flat shoe? It’s not dissimilar for horses with uneven feet; their balance and limb function can be severely affected. Even a slight imbalance can affect joint alignment, overall stride and - ultimately - soundness.

When a horse’s feet turn outwards or inwards, it has a knock-on effect on the position of the saddle and, therefore, the rider.

While more experienced riders may be able to detect imbalance issues early on, less experienced riders may not notice until their horse is struggling with various imbalance related issues.

Fortunately, farriers have the expertise and skills required to manually rebalance your horse’s feet, which helps to correct any soundness issues and stabilise their movement, therefore making life much more comfortable for a poorly balanced horse.

It’s important to look out for any developing problems with your horse’s feet as prevention is always better than cure. Any concerns you have are best discussed with a farrier, no matter your horse’s discipline or level.

Our DMs are always open for questions!

It's good to be back home after a brilliant trip out to Sweden at the end of last week to work with the Olympic eventing team - it was great to see everyone again and catch up after the Paris Olympics and begin the planning for LA 2028.

We stayed at Flyinge, which is a big equestrian centre in the south of Sweden, where I last came for the Nordic Hoof Summit just after in the Olympics in 2024.

Huge thank you too to Therese Viklund for being in charge of the travel plans and making sure we all (the farrier!) got there on time!

Trying to explain farriery terminology in plain terms sometimes gets us like…😆

The science behind feet may be our meat and drink, but certainly can be hard to put simply. We try very hard though!!

Would you believe us if we told you that these pads were on their sixth re-fit before they eventually wore out and we fitted some new ones?!

One of the great advantages of using plastic pads is that they can be refitted time and time again.

Here we have a pair of Jim Blurton and Derek Poupard’s 3D half-mesh frog support pads, which have in fact now been re-fitted six times.

This means that the cost is spread across six shoeings, making them far more affordable for the owner, and much more comfortable for the horse too.

Remedial work doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to be worth it.

When this horse came to Ben, he had large hoof cracks that required metal plates to stabilise and prevent further separation.

That kind of damage doesn’t heal quickly and there’s no shortcut to fixing it.

With consistent, correct shoeing over the course of a year, the hoof has been able to grow down properly. As the balance improved and the foot stayed supported, the cracks grew out instead of worsening.

Today, there are no cracks, no plates and his overall hoof quality is excellent.

Good hoof health is built over time. Consistency, patience, and proper farriery makes the difference.

The tough life of Frank - episode 49568!

Today is Frank's second birthday and Debs has finally caved in and bought him a new bed for her desk so that he can observe the forge in action without even having to set foot outside 🙄😂🎂
