Adderbury & District WI The Adderbury & District Women's Institute - a modern thinking WI that serves to inspire and inform

Adderbury and District Women's Institute was formed in November 2010. We meet in The Institute, Adderbury, on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. We met by Zoom during Lockdown but now, since September 2021, we are meeting again at The Institute at 7.30pm on
1st Thursday of every month. Activities over the past four years have included guest speakers on a wide variety of subjects including local history, Dogs for the Disabled, beekeeping, the Mystery of Agatha Christie, English Cut Flowers, Costumes in the theatre and the history and memories of Whitney blanket making. We have had demonstrations of how to make ourselves look more glamporous and make the best of our wardrobes, how to cook Japanese and now our latest demo on cooking family meals without meat or fish (October 2014), and trips out to Denman College, Lord Leycester Hospital, Ditchley Park and Broughton Grange garden. In May 2011, we were privaleged to have Pru Leith come and give us a very entertaining evening, recalling her life experiences and some of the amazing things she has achieved. Not only do we meet once a month but we also have various activities going on throughout the month for those who are interested including a knitting group, which has now become our revisioned "needlecrafters" group, aa reading group with a wide-ranging book list and our walking group which, in the summer of 2014, visited a Medicinal Herbalists garden for a talk on the use of such herbs and their home application plus a tour of this very lovely garden. You are most welcome to come along to any of these "extra activity" groups. They are usually held in a member's house, so please keep an eye on our notice board at The Institute, or on our website for venue details. All ideas are very welcome, whether that is suggestions for our monthly meetings, trips, speakers or for our extra monthly activities. So if you have a skill or wlould like to learn something new, please do let us know and we will try to accommodate. Many members come to our meetings in order to meet and make new friends, We all live very full and busy lives but if you would like to come along to one of our meetings you will be assured of a warm welcome and we will ensure that you will not be left along if you do no know anyone. Each year we like to support a charity and to date we have supported GAGA - Goodwill & Growth for Africa UK(GAGA) - looks at working, funding and forging relationships with organisations which aim to alleviate the effects of poverty, disease (HIV/AIDS) and violence on African children and the greater communities that they live in; BYHP - Banbury Young Homeless Project - BYHP exists to support and assist Young People in finding and maintaining a safe home from which they may be assisted to determine their own opportunities in life. We currently maintain a donation box for suitable food items at our monthly meetings. The current year's charity is the Frank Wise School - a community school for children with Special Needs, between the ages of 2 to 19, described by Ofsted as "Outstanding and Inspirational". Beginning at Wood Green

House with 30 pupils, the school has now been running for 50 years, currently catering for 107 children and young people.

Unfortunately, our lovely Christmas tree at St. Mary's Christmas Tree Festival failed to gather in enough votes for a prize award but I heard many good comments on the beauty of our tree and the totally handcrafted decorations, which were very much appreciated.

Sharp & Blunt won the Community prize for their stunning tree. High Flyers with their very pretty tree for the youngest group and The Bell won for the Business prize. Overall winner went to the Morris Men tree.

Apologies if I have disremembered or misheard this last prize award designation.

St. Mary's was awash with beautiful, pretty and glittering Christmas trees and the festival made for a great weekend with refreshments, mince pies and mulled wine too ###

Members gathered this evening at The Institute for our December social event - our Christmas meal, provided by the splendid caterer who has fed us over the last few years.

Delia and her team of very willing helpers arranged wonderful table decorations and arranged everything so beautifully. Lucky raffle tickets were scattered about, on the underneath side of a few chairs, with the lucky occupant being able to make her choice from a marvellous selection of delicious edible goodies.

Our Christmas tree at St. Mary's Tree festival this weekend was won by your truly and will be taken home at the end of the festival and Christmas carol service She also won a raffle prize.

The Institute was delightfully warm and a wonderful evening was enjoyed by all attending members ###

Members gathered for our December social event and we all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas dinner, lots of friendly chatter and a raffle. Earlier in the afternoon we dressed our Christmas tree for St. Mary's Christmas tree festival and here is our tree with Janet, Margaret & Chris. Our tree's theme is 'bystanders can be life savers' and featured heart decorations of broken hearts, teardrops and many other fascinating shapes & decorations. We are arranging training sessions for CPR and defibrillator usage early in 2026 at The Institute. Fundraising for a defibrillator for The Institute will begin in the New Year ###

And this week members of our Meriel's Book Group met at The Bell for their 25 November book read - Unfinished Portrait by Agatha Christie writing as Mary Westmacott - followed by our Host's menu of buttered chicken curry with a glass of our favourite tipple. We had an excellent evening together and all topped-off by coffee.
Thanks to The Bell for their delicious menu ###

Members are still very delighted and surprised with the sum of over £600.00 made from our stall at St. Mary's Church Christmas Market last Saturday 22 November 2025 and we remain pleased that so many visitors and members made their way to our stall for their Christmas buys. Our sincere thank you's to everyone ###

Now we are all eagerly looking forward to our Christmas Social event this coming week, Thursday 4 December, which takes place after we have dressed our Christmas Tree for the St. Mary's Christmas Tree Festival, an event we always enjoy. We will all be visiting the Festival which runs from Friday 5th -Sunday 7th December and voting for our favourite trees, before the Church Service and announcement of the prize winning tree and category trees.

This week - November 24 - our Website Group met and welcomed three new possible members to take our website forward for 2026 and onwards and we we were delighted to have the opportunity of showing them our management tools. Thanks to Bernice for hosting our gathering.

Our WI stall at St. Mary's Christmas Market on Saturday 22 November, 2025. We hosted a wonderful array of homemade preserves - jams, marmalade, lemon curd and variously flavoured apple jellies - mint and chilli - and quince jellies, plus chutney, cakes including Christmas cakes, biscuits and meringues.

Members helped at various time slots throughout the day to man our stall and to set everything up early on Saturday morning, with all members wearing our own WI aprons.

Members visited during the morning with further food items and to buy goodies for themselves. We also had a few handmade cards from Cindy.

Our sincere thanks to Theresa for providing storage accommodation for most of our stall goods and for a gathering on Friday morning, with Maureen and Margaret, to organise pricing details and ensure everything was labelled correctly.

All of our homemade goodies were transported to St. Mary's early on Saturday morning. The day was a great success for all concerned and even the wet and damp conditions failed to dishearten anyone ###

Our Suzi Stathers presentation on 6 November 2025 with Suzi telling us about the bobbin lace making skills that came to England from Europe in the late 16th century, before dying out with the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century. Suzi described the wonderful array of distinctive bobbins made and used to create the lace which was prized so highly. The tools made and used, the patterns created, early pieces made without corners until someone found a way to add corners to pieces. Of black lace so bad for the eyes, of doillies and how they came into being and square shapes for photograph frames.

Of bobbins for commemorations, for family and loved ones for sweethearts off to war, for pets and for the deceased.

Of plain bobbins, highly decorated ones, of glass beads and spangles.

Of hanging bobbins for the victim as people gathered to watch the grisly sight .

Of St. Catherine, Patron Saint of weavers, spinner, spinsters and lace makers and Cattern cakes, flavoured with caraway seeds, to celebrate her special day. of Jumping over their candles to 'Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick'. Just imagine how dangerous that must have been and singing songs to help get them through their long tedious hours of work

Remembrance Day and today Sue and Margaret put out our WI Poppy wreathes and crosses as we have been doing for several years now.

The poppies went into St. Mary's Church and our crosses were placed in front of Adderbury's Lone Soldier.

We do this for all of our Branch Members - Lest We Forget ###
