Today, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and Positive Futures launched a first-of-its-kind training programme focused on living sustainably, designed for people with a learning disability.

Co-designed with professionals in the sector and people with a learning disability, the 'Caring for our World' programme offers an inclusive, awareness raising path to ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping a greener future in NI.

The programme is funded by Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) through the Carrier Bag Levy and we were joined by Minister Andrew Muir for our launch event at Queen's University Belfast.

Through the event, we shared how this training empowers both staff working in the sector and people they support with a learning disability, to build knowledge and take action to Care for our World.

At Positive Futures person-centred support isn't a buzzword – it’s built into everything we do.

One of the ways we ensure person-centred support is through the work of our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) team.

At Positive Futures, our PBS specialists bring in-depth knowledge and long-term support to staff teams across the organisation. They work alongside our Support Workers to understand what each person needs, and how best to support them.

For Erin Quinn, one of our PBS specialists, the difference is in the time and trust built over weeks and months.

“In previous roles, I barely had time to get to know people,” she says. “Here, I can really connect, not only with the individuals we support, but with the staff teams around them. That’s what allows us to make real progress together.”

PBS at Positive Futures is embedded into our support plans to help people live fuller lives, with confidence and dignity.

What’s it like to work as a Support Worker with Positive Futures?

☀️ Every day brings something new

You might be helping someone plan a meal, learn a new skill, or build confidence with a daily routine. Some days feel straightforward. Others don’t. But what stays steady is the way you show up: calm, respectful, and consistent.

🧭 You build trust over time

This is long-term, person-centred work. You learn what matters to someone and how best to support them – not through guesswork, but through listening, patience, and presence. That depth is what makes the role meaningful.

💬 Boundaries and communication are key

People rely on you to be clear, reliable and fair. That means knowing when to guide, when to step back, and always acting in a way that protects a person’s rights, voice and choices.

🌱 You’re supported to grow

You’re not doing it alone. Our teams are collaborative. You’ll get proper training, regular supervision, and space to reflect and develop your skills. We take the work seriously, and we take care of each other, too.

🤝 This is work that takes commitment

Support work asks a lot. It takes time, focus, and a willingness to keep learning. But for the right person, it’s deeply rewarding. You’ll be part of something that genuinely transforms lives.

Possibility Not Disability

Established in 1995, Positive Futures works across Northern Ireland to achieve dreams and transform lives. We support and empower people and their families to have choice and control. We support people with a learning disability, acquired brain injury and autistic spectrum conditions to be fully included, accepted and valued in their local communities and to live the lives they want.

In 2017/18 we supported over 400 people (children and adults) and their families through a range of services and projects including our Supported Living Services (and peripatetic housing support services) – enabling the person we support to live in the home of their choice, Residential Short Break Service, Shared Lives Service – enabling an adult with a learning disability to be supported by a volunteer family for agreed periods of time, Family Support Services and Autism Outreach Service – delivering practical support to families with a child with a learning disability, Brighter Futures Project – support for families with a child (0-12) with a disability and the Better Together Project – matching ‘hard to reach’ people with a learning disability with volunteer mentors to help the person supported to achieve a goal and reconnect with the community.

We support people with a range of needs, from moderate learning disability to complex needs and challenging behaviours.

We have an extensive track record of successful project work, working with all five NI Health and Social Care Trusts (HSCTs) and a range of funders (e.g. large national funders such as The Big Lottery and Children In Need, Local District Councils and NI Ministries such as the Department for Communities and regional Northern Ireland funders such as Ulster Garden Villages) to deliver innovative, community based support and sustainable outcomes.
