Earwax is Not Really Wax

It’s called wax, but it’s not a wax at all. The name comes from the waxy texture. Earwax is made partially of skin cells from the auditory, or ear, canal. This area contains skin that is always renewing itself. As dead cells drop off, they are pulled in to produce earwax.
Earwax also consists of secretions from two glands — specifically, the ceruminous and the sebaceous glands. The ceruminous gland is a sweat gland that rests just outside the auditory canal. The sebaceous glands excrete oil that helps lubricate the skin.
When you break it down, earwax is made of:
Fatty acids
Squalene
Alcohols
Cholesterol
They mix with the dead skin cells to create this very important substance.

Hair grip or pen lid? You know who you are and you are not alone!! 😆😆

It’s a big fat NO to putting anything into your ear canal, cotton buds included. It’s OK to gently clean round the entrance to your ear canal with a cotton bud to remove any excess wax, but anything more might just push the wax further into your ear or damage your ear canal.

Ears are generally self cleaning and most of you will never have a problem with a build up of wax but, if you do, give me a call or send me a message. We’ll see if you’re growing any spuds in there!

Hello everyone. I have just started Prime Ear Care, providing ear health checks and ear wax removal in the comfort of your own home (or workplace!). I am a qualified and registered Paramedic and have worked for the NHS for the past eighteen years.

My training and ongoing support is provided by the Tympahealth academy and is endorsed and accredited by The British Society of Audiologists (BSA) and The BritishSociety of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA).

I use digital otoscopy and provide an ear health check, ear wax removal by microsuction (industry Gold Standard) and a hearing screening. If anything untoward is found I can provide you with a digital file with images and/or videos to take to your GP should you need further treatment.

All this wrapped up in a friendly and professional service.
