At Yorkshire Dyspraxia Service, we understand that every child develops at their own pace, but some children struggle to catch up with peers.

Did you know dyspraxia assessments can take place from age 5?

Our assessments are fun, relaxed and child friendly, so children feel comfortable while we explore how they move, learn and manage everyday skills.

Signs of dyspraxia in younger children aged 5–7 may include:

• Difficulties with handwriting or effortful pencil control
• Delayed hand dominance (switching hands frequently)
• Finding PE tricky – challenges with balance, catching, throwing or coordination
• Trouble learning independent dressing (buttons, zips, shoes, coats)
• Struggling with fine motor skills like scissor use, crafts or small tools

If these sound familiar, an early assessment can provide clarity, practical strategies, and the right support both at home and school.

Book an appointment with Yorkshire Dyspraxia Service — we’re here to help your child thrive 💛

🤩📣 New research opportunity for children with DCD/dyspraxia!

🧐 We want to know whether balance difficulties are linked to differences in how the brain responds to sudden losses of balance. This study involves one visit to our labs in Manchester and a number of parent-report questionnaires.

✏️ Does your child use an unusual pencil grip? It could be a sign of dyspraxia.

The photo shows a range of atypical grasps including a thumb wrap grip, where the thumb wraps tightly around the pencil and fingers. While many children experiment with different pencil grasps as they learn, a persistent or awkward grip like this can sometimes be a sign of dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder).

Children with dyspraxia often experience:

• Poor fine motor control

• Hand fatigue when writing

• Messy or slow handwriting

• Difficulty manipulating small objects (buttons, cutlery, scissors)

• Avoidance of drawing or writing tasks

An unusual pencil grasp develops because the child is trying to create extra stability when their hand muscles or coordination don’t feel strong or controlled enough. It’s their way of compensating but it can make writing harder and more tiring over time.

If you’re noticing tricky pencil grips or handwriting struggles, an assessment can help identify what’s going on and guide the next steps 💛

Dressing Made Easier 🤠

Getting dressed shouldn’t be stressful! Here are some simple tips to make mornings smoother and more independent. 🌟

• Lay out clothes the night before to reduce morning stress.
• Choose clothes with simple fastenings (zips over buttons). Choose footwear with easy fastenings such as slip ons.
• Sit down while dressing to improve balance and reduce fatigue.
• Use colour-coded drawers or labels for quick outfit choices.

Why it helps: Planning ahead and simplifying choices reduces decision fatigue and makes mornings calmer 👕
