What cultural activity makes Barnsley special to you? Cultural organisations are working together on a bid for Barnsley to become UK Town of Culture 2028 and we’d like to hear your views.
There’s a £3million prize for the winner of the UK Government’s competition to fund a transformational cultural programme.
Multiple organisations are working together to bring it to Barnsley and we’re asking residents to fill in a short survey to help shape the bid.

At The Exchange Recovery College we take an educational rather that clinical approach towards recovery from mental and physical health problems. Courses and workshops are co-designed, produced and delivered by people who have a lived experience of mental health and who are trained in the educational approach. These Individuals work together with clinicians and other health professionals to produce courses that provide information and knowledge around mental health conditions and also teach self-management skills and tools.
The recovery college offers a learning technique which is probably different from anything that people have experienced before. This is a model using the idea that we can learn to recover from, and better manage our own mental health because other people have learnt to do so before us. The recovery college teaches the individual to self-manage. They start taking control of themselves and their life and it gives the power back to them because they aren’t just a patient any more. They are a student. This takes them from being someone who may feel broken and in need of fixing to somebody who has made the decision to move forward and is in the process of learning how to do so. The Exchange Recovery College is about looking beyond someone’s mental health diagnosis and enabling them to identify and work towards achieving their own hopes and dreams. We believe in acceptance not judgement.
We welcome absolutely anybody and everybody into The Exchange Recovery College and offer individuals the opportunity to try something new, to spread their wings and learn new skills and to give themselves a chance to get better in ways that they didn’t think they could. Although it can be a bit scary the first visit, everyone is really lovely and supportive.
People come to the College for a variety of reasons. Some may want to get out of the house or perhaps they want to make some form of connection and that is fine. Others may want to learn more about specific illnesses or because they enjoy building on their existing knowledge and as long as we can support them to achieve their goals we are happy to do so.
To enrol with the college, students can fill in the enrolment form on line or in the prospectus. Forms can be completed manually or electronically and students can enrol themselves. The process is all self -referral. We will not share your information with any other parties unless we have your consent to do so. This may be for advertisement purposes such as sharing your photo in an annual prospectus to share your success story with other organisations.
