We’re incredibly proud to recognise Laura for her outstanding leadership and lifesaving actions on our busy labour ward.
During a rare and unexpected emergency in which a patient went into respiratory arrest following op**te administration, Laura’s quick thinking and clinical expertise led to the immediate administration of Naloxone a truly life‑saving intervention.
Throughout the incident, she remained calm, focused, and compassionate, confidently leading the emergency response and supporting her team through an extremely stressful situation.
Afterwards, Laura continued to shine by providing supportive debriefing for all staff involved, promoting reflection, learning, and best practice across the team.
Laura embodies our Trust values every day. She is a respected and valued member of the MDT, treating her colleagues with kindness and respect while consistently delivering best practice and exceptional patient care.
✨ Thank you, Laura, for your professionalism, leadership, and dedication. You truly make a difference. ✨

💙 Feedback Friday 💙

There’s no better way to end the week than with kind words from one of our patients:
“The care and treatment I received was very good and the staff were extremely nice and supportive. They were so kind and caring — I couldn’t have wished for anything better than the care they gave me.”

A huge thank you to our amazing teams who go above and beyond every single day.

Your compassion truly makes a difference.

This National Apprenticeship Week, Laura Ruse, who started her first apprenticeship at the hospital 22 years ago, shares her journey.

💬 “The apprenticeship programme has given me opportunities that wouldn’t have necessarily been available to me from a college environment.

“I am extremely proud of myself and I am very grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from my colleagues, the Trust and the Vocational Training Team.

“Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to apply what you learn in the classroom in to your day-to-day job – best of both worlds.”

As part of our celebration for National Apprenticeship Week, one of our current apprentices, Jane Boydell, shares her learning.

💬 “I began my journey as an apprentice in September 2005 on the Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship Scheme. Twenty years later, I am now undertaking my third apprenticeship.

“You won’t know everything at the start - ask questions, try new tasks, and explore the wide range of apprenticeships now available.

“With the support of Barnsley Hospital, starting my third apprenticeship feels like one ongoing journey of learning, confidence and new possibilities.”

This National Apprenticeship Week, Scott McGougan, who started his apprenticeship at the hospital in 1996, shares his journey.

💬 “I began as a youth trainee, completing placements across IT, HR and procurement.

I quickly found my place in receipts and distribution where I felt comfortable and supported and secured a permanent role in 1998. Nearly 30 years later, I’m still here and still enjoying my job. My advice? Go for an apprenticeship – it’s a great way to start a career.

“Without the apprenticeship I really don’t know where I would be right now. All I can say is that I found a place that I was happy to work and still am very happy to this day – 30 years after starting here.”

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, Todd Finnerty, who works in our Portfolio Management team, highlights the importance of learning whilst working.

💬 “My advice to anyone starting an NHS apprenticeship is to ask questions, take feedback positively and not be discouraged by setbacks. Every experience builds confidence, skills and opens doors to future opportunities.

“I never knew time could fly, before starting at the NHS.”
