Working week complete and the long weekend stretches ahead of me. 2 fantastic health coaching groups today with interesting discussions about how our health is multifaceted and how managing our blood glucose not only involves considering our food choices and physical activity levels but also our psychological well-being, stress levels and sleep quality. Mind matters when it comes to our overall health as well as reducing blood glucose levels. For me, managing type one diabetes everyday, this weekend will involve prioritising some relaxation and mindful moments to rest, reset my nervous system and regulate my blood glucose levels as well as my physical energy levels

Simple, easily transportable, nutritionally dense snack of figs and almonds to keep this health coach going until lunch.
Did you know that figs and almonds are both great plant sources of calcium plus the nuts are rich sources of essential fats and protein too? Right on topic for today’s session, looking at ‘foods that keep us fuller for longer.’ These participants want to learn how to reduce blood glucose from a pre diabetic range in a sensible, nutritious, balanced, non-restrictive way…my lifestyle exactly 💚

Love to spread the word about how flippin’ fabulous fibre is! Spent the afternoon health coaching a group of people who are making commendable efforts to reduce their blood glucose back to normal range and today I supported them to understand how FIBRE plays a significant role in this 💚 They have left with knowledge, tools and ideas for reducing their intake of refined carbohydrates and upping their intake of fibre and unrefined carbs. I had fun ‘fibre layering’ my own evening meal tonight, turning wholemeal pasta into a fibre rich ULTIMATE PASTA salad, thanks to and her recipe from ‘The Unprocessed Plate’ book - always close to hand in my kitchen 💚

Annoyingly high blood glucose reading before work this afternoon made me want to moan loudly, swear and ‘throw in the towel’
After all, I’d made a good breakfast choice, jogged with the dog and done some resistance strength training for 20 mins too and this is how my blood glucose repaid me! 😩

Instead of lingering in this negative state and feeling like a failure I tried hard to turn it around by asking myself “what CAN I do, what CAN I control just here and now?” Answer: I had time to move my body by grabbing the hoover and giving the stairs a vigorous, quick hoover and I just had time for a brisk 5 min walk around the block before my coaching group to use up some of that excess blood glucose…so that’s what I did.

It’s having the desired effect 😊
Simple, positive solutions are within our reach if we calmly look for them, just doing what we can and not giving up completely on the hard days and looking at the bigger picture💚

Looking forward to my Friday night treat waiting for me in the freezer that won’t play havoc with my blood glucose control! 💚
To make 12-16 of these delicious bites to get more fibre into your day, naturally sweet and so satisfying: chewy dates, creamy nut butter and soft banana slices, all coated in a rich layer of dark chocolate…follow this simple recipe.

Pit and halve 18 Medjool Dates - press onto greaseproof paper in an even layer (about 5 rows with the dates just touching each other)

Spread the nut butter (4 heaped tbsp) gently over the dates

Chop 2 bananas and layer the slices on top

Melt 150g dark chocolate and drizzle evenly over the top

Freeze for at least one hour then sprinkle over a pinch of flaky sea salt (optional)

Slice and enjoy!

Keep slices in the freezer (if there are any left!!!)

Having just spoken to a room full of people about the benefits of both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training for reducing blood glucose and increasing insulin sensitivity, I powered on an uphill brisk walk to reap some of those benefits myself.
It’s a winning combo which can work its magic up to 48 hours afterwards and means I can reduce the amount of insulin my pod administers 🙌🏻
I love how participants left feeling that cardiovascular and resistance exercise was definitely doable for them in some form, even if that looked like lifting and pushing a heavy wheelbarrow around their garden or standing up from their chair unassisted a few times in a row. It doesn’t have to mean lengthy gym sessions with heavy weights where you might feel out of your depth and uncomfortable and I so enjoy helping people realise this and building physical activity into their own unique lifestyles 💚 💪🏻

With 1 in 3 adults in the UK living with pre diabetes I am very proud to deliver The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme designed to help people at risk of Type 2 diabetes make lasting lifestyle changes. One gentleman today contributed keenly to a group discussion openly stating ‘I’ve got to start some where.’ He took that first step today on his diabetes prevention journey 🙌🏻
I’m really proud of everyone who starts this programme for committing to improving their own health. With lived experience of diabetes I know how hard it can be. I know the struggles. I know the daily challenges. Most importantly I know how to overcome them and intend to fully support participants all the way. I also offer 1:1 coaching💚

Will this afternoon snack get 👍🏻 or 👎🏻 from my children?

Fibre discs jam packed with, you guessed it;
💚fibre
💚omega 3 essential fats
💚plant protein
💚vitamins and minerals like Vitamin E and Magnesium

Plus the addition of a delicious drizzle of dark chocolate…well it’s a thumbs up from me 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I’m taking mine with a chamomile tea to eat pre health coaching session this afternoon to keep my blood glucose levels in target and my focus on point 💚

Pre planned, nutritious snacks can be strategically placed between balanced meals to give us that fullness factor and stave off cravings, maintain energy and concentration levels and regulate blood glucose whilst supporting us to maintain a healthy weight.

Snacks don’t have to derail our healthy eating intentions. They are an opportunity to maximise our nutrient intake across the day when we make great choices! 🥜🫐🍓

Health Coaching gives me such a ‘glow!’ Can’t you tell by my cheeks today! 🔥 Just started 20 new people off on their Diabetes Prevention journey.
Today we touched on some of the serious complications of prolonged high blood glucose, which damages blood vessels throughout the body. When I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes aged 18 I lived in fear, bombarded with constant warnings of a bleak longterm outcome plagued with blindness, limb amputations, kidney failure, heart disease and stroke. It can be a terrifying prospect BUT these days I use this knowledge as extra incentive to do all I can on a daily basis to live a lifestyle and eat a nutrient rich diet that helps me maintain stable blood glucose levels as much as possible and ward these complications off. Today I passed on that message of hope to this group of people so they could leave feeling empowered and optimistic about their future, not scared of it, knowing that the power to make small but impactful changes is in their own hands 💚

Having just spent the morning health coaching a lovely group of people and discussing the benefits of regular eating for blood glucose control, energy levels, mood, appetite and concentration (to name just a few) I’m pleased to say I’m practising what I preach. Monday’s dinner of Hearty Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash Soup was reheated for today’s lunch and transported with me in a flask in my car due to the timing of the session to avoid low blood glucose levels, hunger, cravings and subsequent poor food choices! I chose not to leave it to chance and am glad I put in the thought and prior effort now.
No roller coaster blood glucose for me this afternoon thank you very much. Just a satisfying feeling of fullness, satiation, a clear head and plenty of energy 🙌🏻💚

I’m very lucky that my working day can include a short walk, a picnic lunch with a view, fresh air, calmness and great company setting me up for a productive afternoon, balanced blood glucose and energy. If you are stuck indoors or at work, could you stretch or move your body in some way, step outside and breathe deeply for a few minutes, chat and laugh with a colleague or simply put work aside for a restful lunch break? Small consistent healthful habits built into your day can really make a big difference to overall health and well-being 💚

Wish I could just throw my purse, phone and lippy in a bag and be off on my day out but, in reality, my checklist before leaving the house goes like this…

✅Pod change so I have enough fresh insulin for the small matter of keeping me alive today and to bolus for the yummy food and drink stops planned!
✅PDM to keep an eye on blood glucose readings and to deliver background insulin constantly all day long plus extra when I eat
✅Spare blood testing kit including lancets, blood test strips and machine, in case my sensor stops working/rips off and I need to do a finger prick blood test
✅Back up insulin injection pens x2 and a handful of needles in case of pod failure or the cannula becoming dislodged
✅New insulin vial in a keep cool bag
✅Hypo treatments to deal quickly with any unexpected low blood glucose levels so they don’t spoil my day
✅Snacks in case food options out and about aren’t great and I need a quick glucose lift
A day out with Type 1 Diabetes requires forward thinking and preparation…plus a BIG bag!!!
