Q is for Quite!
Whhhaaattttttt has this got to do with pregnancy and birth I hear you say?! WELL I'm going to talk about how this can relate to your pregnancy!
1. Spending some quite time alone practicing guided relaxation, meditations or mindfulness can improve your wellbeing. Try this tonight - placing a hand on your belly where your baby is and a hand on your heart - simply focusing on your breath, quieting your mind - and feel that deep connection between you and your baby. Close your eyes, take a long deep breath in through your nose - feeling your lungs fill and your belly expand, and then left that breath go - out through your mouth with an audible sigh - feeling yourself relax more and more with each breath.
This can be such a powerful way of calming your mind, relaxing your body and connecting with your baby and yourself.

2. Having a quite space when you go into labour can help the hormones of birth work optimally!

What other ways do you enjoy quite time??

O is for Optimal Fetal positioning!
Your baby can be in a variety of different positions in the womb. The vast majority of these positions are variations of normal.
The most optimal position is head first, chin on chest with their back toward your belly. This is due to the shape of a human pelvis and the manoeuvres your baby makes along the journey to being born. A lot of babies however do no start labour in this position - some may have their chin slightly lifted, or have their back against your back (a position call occipito-posterior or 'OP', or more commonly 'back-to-back) - this may mean your labour takes a little longer as your baby makes different manoeuvres. Being upright and active in labour and birth can really help too!

Some positions - like breech (bum first) may mean you are offered a caesarean section (although there are different 'types' of breech too!!).

There are things you can do to 'encourage' your baby in to an 'optimal' position such as sitting on a birthing ball (knees lower than hips!!).

While there are things that you can do to optimise baby's position its important to remember that your baby has insider information so to trust that your baby knows the most optimal position for him/her.

My classes teach all about baby positions, optimal positioning and active birth positions to work with your baby on their journey to meet you!

N is for.......NO!
Did you know you can say NO to any part of your care? Its important that your care provider gives you evidence based information about the care or pathway of care they are recommending or offering to enable you to make an informed choice.
A really good tool to use is the BRAIN acronym
B - What are the BENEFITS of this?
R - what are the RISKS? (Risks of not proceeding with offered intervention AND what are the risks of the intervention its self).
A - are there any ALTERNATIVES?
I - What is your INTUITION telling you - how do you feel and also consider your INDIVIDUAL circumstances.
N - what happens if we do NOTHING? This can mean nothing at all, or nothing for a few hours/days to give you time to 'wait and see' of thinking time to decide.

You always have a choice and your consent is needed for all interventions and care.

M is for Meconium!
Meconium is the sticky greeny-black substance which lines your baby's intestines in the womb - it then passes as your baby's first poo. It can be tricky to clean off as its very sticky!
Sometimes a baby can pass that first poo while still in the womb which will turn the waters around baby green. This can happen as your baby approaches and goes beyond your 'due date' and is relatively common in post term pregnancies. Sometimes your baby passing meconium in the womb can be a sign your baby is distressed - so its important that if your waters break and they are green you contact your maternity unit straight away - your baby will need some extra monitoring during labour and extra observation for the first 12 hours post birth.

L is for LOVE!!!
As Jack Johnston says in his beautiful song 'better together' "love is the answer to most of the questions in my heart" - its what its all about, meeting your baby, nurturing this new soul, growing and connecting as a family and absolutely everything in-between. And it 100% what my course are about - love and connection in pregnancy and beyond. That amazing love hormone oxytocin was there at conception and will be there when your baby arrives in your arms - its the hormone of contractions and also bonding AND is part of the let down reflex in breastfeeding.
Love also plays an huuuuge part in baby brain development - Love helps to grow a brain, wire up your baby's brain for their entire future and helps them to bloom.
Its important to love yourself too - love your amazing body that is growing your baby, and allow time to nurture and love the new person you will become once your baby arrives. And to love all your support network and partner too.
Love really is everything!

Pregnancy A-Z... K is for Kicks!!!!
Your baby's movements are the best sign of their well being so observing their unique pattern is important as a baby that has stopped or reduced their movements may be a baby that is unwell.
You may start to feel your baby moving between 16 and 20 weeks, sometimes earlier for a second baby, sometimes later for a first baby (although if you have felt no movements by 24 weeks let your midwife know). Once you have started feeling movements they will increase in frequency until about 32 weeks when they will then stay the same. You will become familiar with your baby's usual pattern and if you notice any changes then ring your local maternity unit right away, do not delay. as you approach your due date your baby's movement should stay the same. They do not run out of room or run out of space, so if you notice any changes, once again ring your maternity unit.

No your baby is not 'manipulating you' if you respond when they need something. They are simply showing you that they need feeding, support with sleep or simply a cuddle and trust you enough to help them with that.

Responding to your baby helps build their trust, not only in you and your relationship but with how they view the world. It helps them grow in confidence as they know that their needs are met.

Babies have no choice to ask for help if they need it. They have no other way in the early weeks of communicating apart from crying. They have tiny tummies and need lots of feeds. They need support in getting back to sleep at night. They probably get scared as they've no idea where you've gone and evolution hasn't caught up enough yet for them to know they're not going to get eaten by a bear.

But the way some people react they seem to think it's akin to an adult sitting on the sofa and asking someone to wait on them hand and foot.

Saying that, isn't it nice to sometimes be brought a cup of tea or a biscuit (or six)? Are you being manipulated by your partner if they ask you if you'd pass them a drink while you're up?

[or my favourite trick here of calling in a passing child to bring me something because I don't want to get up... but you know, I gave birth to them, they owe me 😏😆]

Research shows that the more you are 'manipulated' by your baby the more confident and secure they are as children and adults. Ok, replace manipulated by with 'respond to your baby's needs' and we're closer to the actual research.

Probably best to not help them if they're trying to get you to steal the neighbour's car though, no matter how shiny, fast and free from baby clutter it is.

J is for Joy!!
You will feel many emotions on your pregnancy journey and emotional wellness in pregnancy is something which I am deeply passionate about (see E is for Emotional Wellness). It is okay to notice and feel alllll the emotion as you progress through pregnancy, meeting your baby and those early days/weeks/months/years(!) with your little one. One of the most delicious of all those amazing feelings is JOY. The joy of feeling those first movements, the joy of you and your family celebrating a birth announcement or gender reveal, the joy of packing your hospital bag with those first outfits so carefully chosen. The joy of meeting your new baby and exploring their little body...those tiny fingers with perfect fingernails, their smell, seeing their perfect beautiful eyes looking in yours for the first time. The joy of taking them home, meeting your loved ones, that first smile..... you get the idea!
There are many a challenging moment on the road to meeting your baby but lean in to all those beautiful, magical, joyful moments along the way
