How to treat sciatica with osteopathy by a spinal and sports injury specialist ✅

As mentioned in my previous videos, sciatica is most commonly caused by a bulging disc compressing one or more nerves in the lower back.

Osteopathic treatment is a gentle non-pharmaceutical way of releasing the nerve and helping to encourage the disc away from the nerve and resolve the underlying cause of your sciatica.

Early treatment is always recommended but if you’ve had sciatica for months or years then osteopathic treatment can be tailored to you and work on helping you:
✅ Move and bend more easily
✅ Improve your flexibility
✅ Improve your posture
✅ Do everyday things such as lifting children or putting on socks and tying shoelaces again more easily

Gibson Osteopathy is currently taking on new patients and is located locally on the Southfields Business Park in Laindon.

So if you’re struggling with or if you know someone who is then please do get in touch and we can start your rehab programme asap.

Who gets Sciatica and what causes it? ⚡️😫
*
What is it?

Sciatica is pain and/or altered sensations in your leg. Often aggravated by bending and twisting movements.
*
Who gets its?

It affects over 50% of us in our lifetime from 18-40 years old
Is a common age of onset , but some sufferers also start feeling symptoms later in life from 40+ years old. But they are caused by two different types of injury.
*
What causes it?

Ultimately sciatica is caused by compression of part or all of the sciatic nerve.

The L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3 nerves in the lower back interconnect in the buttock forming the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve then runs down the back of the leg all the way down to your toes.

Sciatica can therefore be caused be an internal nerve impingement, most commonly a bulging disc at the L4/5 or L5/S1 level.
OR by an external (peripheral) nerve impingement outside of the spine often in the buttock.
The sciatic nerve is a similar thickness to your thumb and runs a convoluted journey through the buttock and down the leg under several different muscle groups.

18-40 years old:
The liquid in our discs in the nucleus pulposus is at its fullest and healthiest. However, with excessive bending and twisting the ligaments that maintain the shape of the disc fail and it cause the annulus fibrosus around the disc to change shape and compress the nerve as it leaves the spine.
This is a bulging disc.

40+ years old:
The liquid in our discs starts to reduce and the disc becomes thinner causing the nerve roots space in the joints in the spine to become narrower. Sometimes with excessive standing or lifting the nerves can become irritated or trapped as they leave the spine and again cause sciatica.
This is osteoarthritis and spondylosis.

Osteopathic treatment is recommended for helping to treat sciatica and also prevent future relapses.

I will go on in this series to discuss in more detail about what how osteopathic treatment can cause relieve your symptoms.

As always if you’re looking for more help, advice or treatment and you’re living in Essex then do reach out and contact me.

Frozen Shoulder Test

Another Thursday Top Tip following on from my Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis series. This time focusing on how to easily test at home if you have limited shoulder movement and to test if possibly you may have a Frozen Shoulder.

So far previous videos have explained:

✅ What a Frozen Shoulder is and who it affects.

✅ What is happening within the shoulder and when to seek treatment.

✅ How to stretch the shoulder capsule at home with an exercise tutorial.

Now we’re discussing home testing to identify if an issue is occurring so you can detect the issue earlier and seek out treatment EARLIER, as earlier intervention and treatment can lead to more movement retention, less pain/ discomfort and better recovery outcomes.

⭐️ CHALLENGE: ⭐️
Try this exercise at home and comment below letting me know if you can make the full circle with your Left, Right or Both arms and if not are you missing external rotation and are you needing some treatment.
-Feel free to tag a friend and challenge them to try it!

It’s time for another Thursday Top Tip: Stretching a Frozen Shoulder

Treating Frozen Shoulders is one of my specialisms and this exercise video is designed to help those with restricted mobility in their shoulder. Whether that be due to Frozen Shoulder/ Adhesive Capsulitis, Subacromial impingement, Glenohumeral osteoarthritis or a Rotator cuff injury.

This exercise is great in all three phases of Frozen Shoulder. In the first phase, known as the ‘Freezing Phase’ the capsule in the shoulder tightens and starts to limit your movements and can be very painful.

This exercise will not prevent the second and third phase from occurring but it can help retain as much as possible before the second phase the ‘Frozen Phase’ takes hold.

***This exercise should not be continued if it is painful or it aggravates your symptoms during it after***

Hands on Osteopathic treatment can help reduce the inflammation build up with the shoulder girdle and improve the movement/biomechanics of the arm, neck and shoulder blade as a whole. This helps to reduce discomfort and improve the recovery outcomes for patients after the final phase of the Frozen Shoulder has finished.

If you would like further help with your shoulder injury and start a tailored treatment and rehab plan please contact the Gibson Osteopathy Clinic in Laindon, Essex for further details and to book an initial consultation.

Frozen Shoders aka Adhesive Capsulitis can be a debilitating condition and be easily misunderstood or misdiagnosed.

There are 3 stages:
❄️ Stage 1 ‘Freezing’
🧊 Stage 2 ‘Frozen’
🌡 Stage 3 'Thawing'

Early detection is key and often patients report to me in the 2nd stage of the condition which is somewhat late. The reasons for this can be varied from:

⏳Patients choosing to grin and bear it and hope it passes without help, like previous shoulder injuries they may have had in the past.
🏥 They have waited up to 20 weeks to see a NHS practitioner in which time their pain and suffering has increased.
❌They may have followed incorrect or inappropriate advice from Dr Google or friends. Or they may have seen another medical practitioner who had misdiagnosed their injuries.

Frozen shoulder IS treatable and patient knowledge about the condition and how and when to seek osteopathic help is key.

More videos will follow with helpful hints and exercises so please share with any friends or family who may be suffering with their shoulders.

Feel free to contact me via direct message, email or phone to discuss your symptoms and the appropriate treatment options for you.

A quick tour of the Gibson Osteopathy Clinic for new patients and for my previous patients that I haven’t seen again yet since I opened my new clinic.

The clinic was renovated just as the first covid lockdown started and has been a fantastic setting for applying the Public Health England covid infection control protocol. This has allowed me to continue to work as a key worker seeing patients safely and effectively throughout each of the national lockdowns.

Patients have loved the new clinic and have found it’s location between Langdon Hills, Laindon and Basildon very handy with easy accessibility from all directions.

There is ample parking at the front of the property and toilet/hand washing facilities are available too.

If you’re looking for an appointment before Christmas please be quick as there are only 3-4 appointments left available for any new seasonal or festive injuries.
