“Love never dies a natural death. It dies because we don’t know how to replenish its source. It dies of blindness and errors and betrayals. It dies of illness and wounds; it dies of weariness, of witherings, of tarnishings.”

Often couples come to therapy believing the love has gone.

More often, the connection has become blocked by protection, fear and misunderstanding.

Love doesn’t survive on feeling alone.

It survives on being seen, heard and understood.

Becoming a parent doesn’t just create a child…
it often creates a whole new awareness of our own childhood.

Many parents are surprised by how much gets stirred up.
Sometimes it looks like:

• feeling unusually protective
• reacting more strongly than expected
• suddenly understanding your own parents differently
• questioning what you want to repeat and what you don’t
• grief for what you didn’t receive
• compassion for what they were carrying
• noticing patterns you didn’t realise were there

Parenting is one of the few experiences where we are holding the child in front of us while also meeting the child within us.

And that can be emotional, confusing, and deeply meaningful.

This isn’t about blaming our parents.
Most did the best they could with what they knew, what they had, and what they were holding.

But awareness gives us something powerful:

the opportunity to choose, rather than just repeat.
Sometimes healing doesn’t happen by looking backwards alone, but by noticing what shows up in the everyday moments:

the tantrum
the bedtime resistance
the clinginess
the independence
the need for reassurance

These moments often touch places in us we didn’t know were still tender.

Parenthood can be exhausting, but it can also be a quiet doorway into understanding ourselves with more kindness.

You don’t have to be a perfect parent.
Just a conscious one.

Many of us are taught to believe that closeness means togetherness at all costs.

Yet, as Esther Perel reminds us, intimacy often thrives when there is both connection and space, closeness and autonomy.

Relationships aren’t sustained by intensity alone, but by the everyday skills of listening, curiosity, repair, and allowing each other to remain whole individuals.

Love isn’t something we either have or lose, it’s something we practice.

Identity is not something we’re born knowing, it forms through relationships, experiences, expectations, and often through adaptation.

Many of us learn who to be in order to stay safe, connected, or accepted. Over time, that can mean parts of ourselves get quiet or hidden.

Identity can shift and evolve.
It can also move back towards what feels most authentic and to a truer part of ourselves, before adaptation became necessary.

Feeling uncertain about who you are doesn’t mean you’re lost. It often means something old no longer fits, or something truer is asking for space.

Therapy can offer a gentle place to explore identity without pressure, labels, or needing to have answers - just curiosity, compassion, and time.

Therapy isn’t only about coping, it can also be about understanding.

Many of the people I work with are asking deeper questions:

Who am I really?
Why do I keep repeating certain patterns?
What matters to me now?
What gives my life meaning and direction?

Counselling can be a space to explore identity, values, purpose and self-understanding, not to “fix” yourself, but to come home to yourself with more clarity and compassion.

I offer integrative counselling and psychotherapy in Basingstoke (Lychpit & town centre) and online.

If you’re feeling drawn to explore this, I’d love to hear from you.

What I mean by kind goals.

Goals don’t need to be huge to matter.
Small, realistic actions done with a bit of kindness, tend to last longer than pressured resolutions.

Goals are also often more achievable when they’re aligned with what actually matters to us - our values! Rather than what we think we should be doing.

Effort builds meaning.

Noticing your effort helps motivation.

💾 Save this if you want a gentler, more realistic way to think about goals this year.

And if it helps, try talking it through with a partner or friend, sometimes saying it out loud makes it feel more doable 🤍

New Year reflections
Big resolutions often set us up to feel like we’ve failed.
Smaller, kinder intentions tend to last longer and feel better too.
Try one question. Or talk it through with someone you trust.
There’s no right way to start the year 🤍

If you’re finding things a bit heavy right now in your relationship, at work, or just within yourself - you’re not alone. I offer supportive, down-to-earth counselling for individuals and couples here in Basingstoke and online.

I work from my cosy practice in Chineham, and also from The Treatment Hub in Basingstoke town centre, so there are options depending on what feels most comfortable for you. Online sessions are available too.

I’m an MBACP Accredited Counsellor & Psychotherapist, and my approach is gentle, trauma-informed, and always led by what you need. Couples counselling isn’t about taking sides, it’s about understanding what’s really happening between you.

In therapy, many partners begin to see one another differently, with new awareness of each other’s inner world: past experiences, fears, and hopes.

This deepened understanding often brings renewed closeness and intimacy, emotional and physical alike.

And for some couples, the process also brings clarity about whether to stay together or separate with more compassion, understanding, and peace.

The focus isn’t on who’s “right” - it’s on rebuilding safety, connection, and emotional honesty.

If you know someone who might be confused about what couples therapy actually is, share this post with them.

You might also enjoy ‘Couples Therapy’ on iPlayer or Esther Perel’s ‘Where Should We Begin?’ podcast for an authentic glimpse into the process.
