Managing our own mood, whilst battling those of a small, not-yet-developed toddler brain is a challenge most menopausal mums of young children find daily, but what can we do to help?
Here's 5 tiny things that actually help (Even on busy mum days)
Try one of these today and tell us which you picked:
1. The 60-second pause ⏱️
When you feel a snap coming, stop and silently count to 10… three times.
(And if you still shout – you’re human, not a robot.)
2. Doorway reset 🚪
Before you walk into a room full of kids / chaos, put your hand on the doorframe,
take 3 slow breaths, and say in your head:
> “I’m allowed to be tired and a good mum.”
3. The kindness swap 🫱🏻🫲🏽
When guilt kicks in after a mood swing, swap
Instead of saying “I’m a terrible mum”
Tell yourself “That was a hard moment. I’m learning and I care.”
4. Two-minute escape ⏳️
Go to the loo, bedroom or even the hallway.
Set a timer for 2 minutes: phone down, deep breathing only.
It’s not selfish – it’s a nervous system reset.
5. End-of-day hug ritual 🫂
At bedtime, give your child an extra hug and say:
> “Today was a bit wobbly, but I love you more than anything.”
This helps them feel secure and reminds you that the love is what lasts.
