Acne isn’t just “acne.”
There are many different types of breakouts, and understanding them is the first step to actually dealing with the problem — not just covering it up.
In the image above, you’ll see several common forms:
•Whiteheads (closed comedones): clogged pores trapped under the skin
•Blackheads (open comedones): pores exposed to air, where oil oxidises
•Papules: small, red, inflamed bumps
•Pustules: inflamed spots with pus at the centre
•Cystic acne: deep, painful, inflamed lesions beneath the skin
•Nodules: large, hard, painful breakouts formed deep under the surface
Different appearance… but very often, the same root cause.
Inflammation.
Most breakouts — especially persistent or painful ones — are driven by inflammation in the skin. When inflammation is high, pores clog more easily, bacteria thrive, healing slows, and the skin stays stuck in a cycle of flare-ups and damage.
This is where things often go wrong.
The beauty and skincare industry is a multi-billion-pound machine, constantly pushing harsher actives, stripping products, aggressive treatments, lasers and resurfacing — many of which focus on the aftermath of breakouts rather than the reason they keep happening. In some cases, this actually worsens inflammation, leaving skin more reactive, sensitive and dependent on even more.
