I’m incredibly proud to share that my daughter has been selected as one of only eight young people to become a Station Manager and Ambassador for the Hampshire Fire Cadets programme.
Last week, she was presented with her new epaulettes by Nigel Atkinson Esq, Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Hampshire Lieutenancy, the personal representative of HM The King. He was so warm and encouraging with all the cadets and their families, and took the time to recognise the commitment it takes to reach this stage. His advice to include this experience on their CVs was spot on.
Her journey to this point has been years of hard work and commitment.
She started as a Fire Cadet in Basingstoke Fire Station, then the next year she successfully applied for Crew Manager following a competitive interview process, before progressing to Watch Manager the following year. In these roles, she supported and mentored the younger cadets (and made lots of friends), helping them develop the same skills and confidence she gained herself.
The Fire Cadets programme offers young people far more than practical skills. It builds confidence, leadership, and responsibility. They also have opportunities to take part in major events such as the VE Day parade in London, as well as supporting local community events across the county.
This has honestly been one of the most valuable experiences of her younger years, and she’s been fortunate to be part of such a supportive and inspiring environment.
She has now jumped at the chance of a role where she can give back and help shape the future of the programme.
A huge thank you to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Firefighters, and volunteers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who make opportunities like this possible.
If you have a cadet programme near you I can’t recommend it enough.
