✨ Nail Surgery – What to Expect at Bawtry Podiatry Clinic

This treatment provides a long-term, often permanent solution to the discomfort caused by ingrown toenails.
What Happens During the Procedure?
All nail surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, which means your toe will be completely numb during the procedure, so no pain can be felt.
You’re welcome to bring along some headphones and your favourite playlist so you can relax throughout.
The Two Main Types of Nail Surgery
Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)
A small, thin section of the nail is removed and the area is treated with a chemical called Phenol to prevent regrowth.
This is usually performed when only the edge of the nail is causing the problem.
Total Nail Avulsion (TNA)
In some cases, we remove the entire nail. This is often done when the nail is thickened, involuted, or infected.
For fungal infections, the nail may be removed without Phenol and treated with a gentle anti-fungal regimen to encourage healthy re-growth.
Before Your Surgery
Before the procedure, we’ll book an initial assessment to make sure nail surgery is the right choice for you.
We’ll also complete a short pre-operative check and go through your consent form, taking time to answer any questions you may have.
Aftercare & Downtime
Following the procedure, you’ll need to rest and elevate your foot for the remainder of the day.
Most people can return to normal activities within 24–48 hours, though we advise avoiding tight shoes or strenuous activity until fully healed.
You’ll return for two follow-up appointments, where we’ll check healing and redress the toe.
