SATs results are in and they are looking good!
Today schools will have had access to this year’s SATs results.
The footnotes are, that on average, children have improved nationally in reading, maths, SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar); and the number of pupils getting reading, writing and maths combined has also increased. Here is the data in comparison to last year.
2025 vs 2024
Reading: 75% - 74%
Writing: 72% - 72% (Teacher assessed)
Maths: 74% - 73%
GPS: 73% - 72%
RWM: 62% - 61%
I think this is brilliant. You'll hear a lot of "It's not as good as pre-pandemic" which is true to some extent but it's not the disaster they make it out to be. Sure, in maths and writing, children are perceived as being behind by a couple of percentage points but there's more than meets the eye.
Firstly, Third Space Learning did a poll and found 72% of veteran teachers thought the maths papers were harder. In addition to this, we see that teacher assessment (where teachers give their opinion separate to SATs) showed that they think more pupils are at the expected level in maths. As for writing, don't get me started! Due to the lack of specificity by the government and the individual opinions of teachers, 'expected standard' can vary from school to school, borough to borough, county to county.
My point is, although SATs can be informative and important, what matters is how you use the information. They have done very well on the whole and hopefully learned a lesson about hard work.
