This is an incredibly useful page to read & to learn about the pain ethogram.

The Hyoid and First Rib Connection Share this post:       Before we get started, let’s establish some basics. What is the hyoid? The hyoid apparatus is a collection of bones and muscles in the horse’s head and controls the balance, coordination, and movement of your horse. It.....

I’m might not be treating any more but I feel so passionately about this. This is so true & so important.……

Public service announcement:

Statements like -

"My horse has always been like this" or "My horse is like that too, so your horse is fine" or "This is how we have always done it"

Are not metrics for success!

The industry has changed significantly since we first domesticated horses, with arguably more proliferation of research around welfare in the last 20 years than ever before.

We have:

Pain ethograms
Muscle atrophy scoring systems
Understanding of calming signals and avoidance behaviour
Correlations between posture and hoof balance
Correlations between posture, hoof balance and pathology
Research around rider biomechanics and saddle fit
Research around behavioural needs and the development of oral and locomotor stereotypies

So, if you think your horse is not right - and you have behaviours that indicate this - you're probably correct!

And if anyone is telling you otherwise, they had better have some significant evidence to support their viewpoint.

Hope this helps ❤️

Lungeing sessions should not last longer than 20 minutes. Here’s why:

• Horses did not evolve to move in circles.
• Lungeing is hard work on the horse’s joints, tendons and muscles.
• Overwork on the lunge (or any situation) can cause pain, injury, discomfort and fatigue.

According to Australian researchers, ‘In an 18-m diameter round-pen, approximately 20 circuits equal 1 km. In just 20 minutes of lunging or round-pen work, a horse may cover around 5 km in distance which, as we postulate, poses musculoskeletal risks due to the constant circular track. Therefore, round-pen/lunging sessions exceeding 20 minutes should be avoided’ (https://tinyurl.com/CuttingTheChase).

I miss treating soooo much but I’m gonna continue to share these amazing videos and share the love for equine back health….
There is a growing trend for fitting across the lumbars… it’s always a big no no for me! The video shows an easy to understand explanation for only fitting to the 18th thoracic. A must watch for horse owners, trainers, students & professionals …
