Dance like no one is watching and help lift ypur spirits πΊπ»ππ»
Depression can be understood as a state of chronic shutdown, often linked to ongoing activation of the dorsal vagal branch of the nervous system. One of the most effective ways to lift yourself out of that shutdown state is through gentle, active movement - things like dancing, walking, or exercising.
A large review of 218 studies involving more than 14,000 participants found that physical activity led to moderate reductions in depression symptoms, and the results were often stronger than those seen with antidepressant medication (SSRIs) or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
Among all the activities studied, dancing showed the biggest improvement in mood and symptom reduction. Walking, jogging, yoga, and aerobic exercise combined with therapy also showed strong benefits. Interestingly, the type of exercise that worked best varied between different age groups and demographics, suggesting that finding the right form of movement for each person might be the key to healing.
