๐ŸŒˆ Rare Disease Day Spotlight๐ŸŒˆ
Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS)

This Rare Disease Day, Nuneaton and Bedworth Primary Care Network is raising awareness of Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS), a condition that affects the nervous system which controls functions such as heart rate and blood pressure. PoTs can be a life altering and debilitating health condition; simply standing up can be a challenge for affected people as their body is unable to adjust to gravity.

๐Ÿฉบ What is PoTS ๐Ÿฉบ
PoTS causes a sudden rise in heart rate when a person stands up. Common symptoms include:
โ€ข Dizziness or light headedness
โ€ข Feeling faint or fainting
โ€ข Heart palpitations
โ€ข Fatigue
โ€ข Difficulty concentrating
โ€ข Chest discomfort

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Who is affected ๐Ÿ‘ฅ
PoTS can affect anyone, but it is most often seen in teenagers and young adults and is more common in women.

๐Ÿ’ก Why awareness matters ๐Ÿ’ก
Patients can often misunderstand symptoms which may delay diagnosis. Rare Disease Day helps highlight conditions like PoTS, improving understanding and support.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’“ Management๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿง
There is no single cure, but symptoms can often improve with increased fluid intake, compression garments, and graded exercise. Some people may also benefit from medication.

๐ŸŒ Further information ๐ŸŒ
To learn more about PoTS, the symptoms and support available, please visit the
NHS and PoTS UK websites:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/postural-tachycardia-syndrome/

๐Ÿ’œ This Rare Disease Day we encourage everyone to learn more and help support those living with PoTS and other rare conditions.

๐ŸŽฅ A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ’™
Hi, Iโ€™m Emma! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Join me as I take you through a typical day working as a Mental Health Practitioner.
As a Mental Health Practitioner, my role is to support patients with their emotional and psychological wellbeing. I work closely with GPs, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team to make sure people get the right care at the right time. Although we do not provide a counselling service, our day to day work includes:

โœ”๏ธ Providing early intervention to prevent issues from escalating
โœ”๏ธ Offering followโ€‘up care and wellbeing reviews
โœ”๏ธ Linking people with appropriate services and community support
โœ”๏ธ Helping to reduce GP workloads by managing mental health needs directly
โœ”๏ธ Supporting patients to build skills to manage their mental health through the use of therapeutic interventions

Want to see what this looks like in action? Watch the video to follow a day in my role! ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿ’™
