We are celebrating Jonathan Strong, from Finaghy, who popped into our Belfast HQ to make his 203rd donation. A tremendous achievement!

Jonathan started donating at the age of 18 years old, when the Bloodmobile visited his workplace, the Shipyard. Jonathan also donated blood at his local church hall in Finaghy, as well as in Dunmurry where he picked up a leaflet about donating platelets. As a blood donor, Jonathan was giving blood about twice a year but wanted to do more to help people. When he read that platelet donors could give every 2 months, he knew this was the path he wanted to take.

Jonathan’s commitment to giving platelets regularly helps to maintain a steady supply of this lifesaving blood product, that has just 5 days shelf life.

Jonathan enjoys helping others through donating blood and platelets, describing it as the right thing to do to help others. A true supporter of our cause, the Finaghy man chuckles as he tells us that he is always encouraging all his friends and family to become a blood or platelet donor.

Jonathan is pleased to know that his platelets are used to help save people’s lives in various situations such as emergencies, surgeries, as well as those going through cancer.

Every donation saves 3 lives. Meaning Jonathan has helped as many as 609 people – the equivalent of roughly 8 double decker buses!

Please join us in the comments section to say a huge THANK YOU and WELL DONE to Jonathan for this lifesaving generosity as he reaches this wonderful donation milestone.

How often can I Donate? 🤔

✅ Males can donate blood every 12 weeks (max 4 times per year).
✅ Females can donate blood every 16 weeks (max 3 times per year).

This is because men generally have higher iron levels than women. By following the blood donation guidelines, you can continue to give the gift of life safely and effectively. 😀

Did you know, Northern Ireland needs 1,200 blood donors every week? That's roughly 1 every 8 minutes. By being a regular blood donor your generosity ensures people get the lifesaving help they need. 👏

We celebrate a remarkable milestone reached by Andrew Fallis from Hillsborough, who has made his 100th, leaving a class legacy of lifesaving.

Andrew first began donating as a student, attending local sessions whenever he could. What started as an occasional act of kindness soon became a long-term commitment to helping others. Over the years, donating blood became part of Andrew’s routine, offering him a sense of purpose and pride in knowing each visit could help save lives.

In later years, donating also became personally beneficial as part of managing his own health. Andrew is now retiring from donating, leaving behind an incredible legacy of 300 lives saved.

Reflecting on his journey, Andrew said he would encourage anyone to donate:

“It is worthwhile and getting blood in is crucial. It doesn’t take long and the staff are always helpful and make it a pleasant experience.”

For Andrew, giving blood has always felt like a win-win, a simple act that allowed him to support others while receiving support in return. Reaching 100 donations is an extraordinary achievement, and we are deeply grateful for his dedication over the years.

Thank you, Andrew, for your commitment, compassion, and the countless lives you’ve helped. Your story is an inspiration to donors old and new.

Our Story

In Northern Ireland three people are transfused every hour and over 800 units of red blood cells are used each week. Donation is simple and usually takes less than an hour yet only 6% of the eligible population donates.
