It's been an absolute pleasure to watch Bronagh build her strength at the studio. She started with a few privates to get her bearings and then joined the group strength sessions. Last week she passed her 1 year anniversary, and today I watched her deadlifting 32kg with ease. This from never having been to the gym before! Slow and steady can get you far. Well done Bronagh!

Vinyasa is another word you have likely heard in a yoga class. It is essentially two words, nyasa, which means to place, and vi which means special. So it's often translated as to place in a special way. What it means in a yoga class is few different yoga poses that you flow between, usually with the rhythm of your breath. For example a sun salutation is a vinyasa. Settling into a vinyasa can be a beautiful way really dropping into the experience of the body and the breath, maybe you have a favourite sequence you like from class?

Have you seen the documentary ‘Come see me in the good light’? Watched it last night and it has me appreciating the light on the plant wall here at the studio, and the feeling of my body after a practice and looking forward to a gym session shortly. It’s about the poet Andrea Gibson and here’s one of their short poems. Wellness Check -

my wellness
by this question:
Is my attention on loving,
or is my attention on
who isn’t loving me?

In line with anatomy tidbit Tuesday yesterday we are spending more time this week in my classes finding the support of our hands and how it feeds up to the shoulders and then building support there. How do you feel your hands support you in your practice? Come along to a class or check out the recordings in our on demand library!

Anatomy tidbit Tuesday! Nothing like the cold coming in winter to make you more aware of your hands! They are such incredible structures, with a quarter of the bones in our body just between our two hands. They are so incredibly dextrous and allow us to reach out and feel the world, as well as bring it towards us. There are a huge number of sensory nerves in our hands as well, which is our bodies way of saying get information from here. In fact if you are ever practicing and finding some area feeling a bit absent or left out, simply placing your hand there will help your brain pay attention. Yoga places unique challenges on our hands and wrists because we are asking them to hold our weight. This week we will dive back into some hand exercises to build in the support they need.

Om, pronounced aum, is a word you may have chanted in a yoga class. It is a mantra and considered sacred. In Hinduism it is considered a primordial sound which all other sounds and the universe derived from. If that all sounds a bit wild to you I would say try it anyways and see how it feels. There is increasing evidence that the vibrations of chanting, especially in a group, can be really powerful.

Anatomy tidbit Tuesday! Last week I talked about your tailbone so naturally we will move up the spine to the sacrum. This is the base of your spine that acts as a key stone in your pelvis. Where as the rest of your spine is vertebrae and discs, the sacrum is five segments that have fused together. There is a joint where it meets the two halves of your pelvis, your sacroilliac joints, which have a little, but very necessary, amount of movement. This model doesn't show the layers and layers of strong connective tissue and muscle that connect it all together! But you can see the yellow nerves and how they emerge through the sacrum ready to journey down to the lower body. This area is one where it's common for people to experience back pain. Mostly because there is so much going on! Strong glute muscles are a sacrums friend for sure. If you want to try and feel your sacrum, stand up and take your thumbs to the top of your pelvis, try and trace the round bones of the sides of the pelvis around to the back of the pelvis and you might be able to feel the moment the bones drop inward. Keep your thumbs there and have a walk about and see if you can feel how the pelvis and sacrum move as you walk!

Namaste is definitely a term you have heard in a yoga class, or if you have travelled to India. Simply put it translates to 'I bow to you' but you could also translate it to 'the light in me bows to the light in you' or simply hello or goodbye. The reason I like to put it at the end of a yoga practice is to acknowledge that we are practicing in community. That even if we are on our mats diving into the experience in our own body the fact that we are doing this practice together has an impact. Our nervous systems respond to each other, we learn from each other and the practice is richer for it!

Anatomy tidbit Tuesday! Guaranteed if you have been in my class you have heard me say something about your tail. Maybe you have thought 'does she think I'm a monkey?' 😆 So here is a visual of what I mean! That bottom tip of the spine is your tail bone and it goes below the sacrum. This model doesn't have a joint where they join but yours does! Thats not to say you can wiggle your tail, mostly because there are so many complex layers of muscle connected to your tail. In fact your tailbone is one of the essential anchor points of your pelvic floor. The reason why it can be useful to use your tail as a reference is because it can really change what happens with the pelvis and lower spine. When we tend to be tight through the back of the hips the tail tends to tuck under and that can round our lower back out. If we play with finding a reach out of our tail it can bring our low back more into a neutral position. If you want to give it a go, get onto all fours and just play with tucking the tail under and reaching the tail up and see what changes in your spine. Then try that again in your downward dog. Better yet, imagine you are a monkey dangling from a branch from your tail. How does it feel?

Duhkha essentially means pain or suffering. We are again getting into the overlap between sanskrit and Buddhist philosophy. Think of all the uncomfortable and challenging experiences that we face in life and they are summed up by this word. Why talk about it? Because as much as we might like to only feel happy we all face challenges. Often in the midst of those challenges is when we can feel the drive to change our lives or way we are living.

Didn't quite manage to capture it on camera, but as I approached the studio yesterday it looked like a rainbow was coming right out of the studio. Love these fleeting moments of beauty nature provides us with. Slow down and look around and try and enjoy more of them!

Anatomy tidbit Tuesday! In english we call this your rib cage, but in german it's called a rib basket. A more fitting description I think for this incredible structure that protects your heart and lungs. From this bottom up perspective you can see how they attach to your spine and your sternum in the front and that is there only support. Now imagine the double dome of your diaphragm that connects all the way around the base of the ribs, kinda like a jelly fish. Then imagine how your heart is connected to to it from above, and the lungs wrapped in a hug around your heart. Take a moment to wrap your arms around your ribs and feel the movement of your breath into your ribs, feel how they move to allow that dance between your heart, lungs and diaphragm.
