2026 is the new 2016 for mental health in Northern Ireland, and the data is hard to ignore.

In 2015/16, 18% of people here reported poor mental health. Almost a decade later, in 2024/25, that figure remains unchanged. Anxiety has increased, while loneliness remains persistently high.

Back in 2016, reform was promised. The Bengoa report, Delivering Together, and the Mental Capacity Act set out a vision for community-based, integrated, outcomes-focused care. Yet in 2026, much of that transformation remains unfinished, slowed by chronic underfunding, workforce shortages, political instability, and rising demand.

Only £12.3 million, just 16% of the funding required, has been invested in Mental Health Strategy actions to date. As a result, services are being forced to focus only on what is realistically deliverable, while experts warn the scale of our mental health crisis cannot be overstated.

At MindWise, we believe 2026 can still mark a turning point, if mental health is funded and prioritised in the way our society urgently needs.

As we close out 2025, let’s face the truth:

Mental health in Northern Ireland is still in crisis.

1 in 5 of us are struggling. Waiting lists are breaking. Su***de rates remain highest in our most deprived communities.

Next year cannot be more of the same.
Mental health deserves more than promises, it deserves funding.
