People always say to me "I'm not flexible enough for yoga" but they are missing the point. Yoga is about meeting yourself where you are. It is arguably more about the mind than the body.
Asana (physical practice of postures) is important and is the bulk of what you expect at a class with me, we also breathe mindfully through each pose with meditation prompts throughout and also some more structured pranayama (breath control) techniques and dhyana (meditation practice).
In asana there is also elements of strength and balance. Strength, balance and flexibility are attributes we need in life mentally as well as physically, and through this hour practice, we meet ourselves where we are at, through the laughs the wobbles, the work we put in.
Flexibility is a wonderful byproduct, and it feels soo good to get a stretch. It releases tension, and body parts can also be associated with emotions so many find emotions can be eased through the release of a good stretch. And my class often requests some nice stretches over a strong flow!
Every class I work off a theme, whatever is going on astrologically with the moon or the time of year, or a yoga philosophy theme. We are working through the chakras at the moment but February is so significant we are concentrating on what's going on externally at the moment.
I try my best to balance all the different aspects but if my class ask me for some nice stretches that is what they will get! And if your not flexible it will help you BECOME flexible and maybe on the way to touching your toes you realise yoga is something more than flexibility.
My classes are small, intimate and beginner and more seasoned yogi friendly, if your feeling the call to practice other aspects of yoga or to try something new, we are at Thursday 7-8pm £8
