Stress and Overwhelm
Naming emotions doesn't give the emotions power, it gives us power - the power to move through them, to make meaning, to make new choices, and to learn about ourselves and the world.
Before writing Atlas of the Heart, I used the terms stress and overwhelm interchangeably and without discernment. I no longer do that. The field of neurolinguistics is teaching us that language doesn't just communicate emotion, it shapes how and what we're feeling.
I don't want to create overwhelm when what I'm actually feeling is stress. For me, stress is barely managing the Whac-A-Mole game at the carnival, and overwhelm is leaving the carnival in tears.
And, not being able to find my car.
The definition of overwhelm that could FEEL the moment read it is from Jon Kabat-Zinn: Overwhelm is the all-too-common feeling that "our lives are somehow unfolding faster than the human nervous system and psyche are able to manage well."
That unfolding feels like mind, body, and spirit quicksand to me.
There is growing evidence that the antidote to overwhelm appears to be nothingness or "non-doing" as Kabat-Zinn describes it. Now, I've trained myself to couple the terms: I'm overwhelmed, and need some nothingness. If the recovery doesn't demand nothingness, it's probably stress.
Wishing you good food, good company, and meaningful non-doing this season.

It took me tears to realise that sometimes people's actions are the closure.
Waiting for explanations or apologies that never come can keep us stuck in a cycle of frustration.
Learning to accept what is, without needing a final word, is its own kind of freedom 😊β™₯️

I’ve decided that Wednesday is going to be my nominated day of the week to pursue comedy, silliness, happiness and the lighter side of life.
Starting my day before work with my favourite comedians Laurel and Hardy to put me in the right vibe πŸ€£πŸ˜†πŸ€πŸ˜ΉπŸ˜‚πŸ˜œπŸ˜

πŸ’ Worry has a way of sneaking in when we care the most.
It tells us we’re being responsible β€” that if we just think hard enough, we can stop bad things from happening. But often, worry just keeps our minds busy and our hearts tired.

If you notice yourself stuck in worry, try pausing for a moment.
🌿 Take a deep breath.
🌿 Ask yourself, β€œIs there something I can do right now?”
If the answer is yes, take that small step. If not, remind yourself it’s okay to let it rest for now.

You don’t have to face your worries alone β€” talking them through can bring relief, perspective, and sometimes even a little peace. πŸ’›

Name it to Tame it

Our emotions can feel like a storm sometimes - swirling, changing, and hard to understand. But here's the magic: when we pause and name what we're feeling, we start to calm the storm.
Labeling emotions helps us make sense of what's going on inside. It gives our feelings shape and direction - turning confusion into clarity, and overwhelm into understanding.

So next time you feel "off," try saying it out loud: "I feel anxious," "I feel excited," "| feel sad." You'll be surprised how much lighter it feels once it's named. (

Our Story

I offer a unique and inspirational programme of creative sessions and workshops in the community for individuals and groups. I bring together skills from the visual arts, coaching, mindfulness, meditation, counselling, clinical hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and yoga. I strongly believe that we are all creative, creativity is how we express and identify who we are as humans. Creativity is not exclusive to 'artists'. My workshops and classes are designed for people with little experience, they are experimental, techniques are taught and the classes are built on a foundation of discovery and encouragement. I have experience working with children and adults with learning difficulties, people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, adults with dementia and adults with brain injuries. I have nearly 30 years experience facilitating therapeutic work within the NHS, in the community, in private practice and teaching in adult and further education . Experienced wellbeing practitioners are also very welcome as new techniques are explored within a variety of mediums. The classes I offer are within a range of creative mediums to help people to re-connect with their creative side, have fun, help people to explore their creativity and to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being. Arts/ crafts making/ yoga, counselling, hypnotherapy, coaching, mindfulness and meditation are all therapeutic and the creative process is a growth - producing experience. Creativity offers an outlet and a release from life's stressors and responsibilities.
