💥Children are really not just mini adults and it is important when you choose to see a physio that you pick one that understands how children develop, knows common childhood conditions that must not go missed, understands how to assess or treat a child age appropriately to get the best out of your child and to involve both child and family in all aspects of their physiotherapy needs. If you want to see a children’s physio or have any questions please contact me at Megan.infinityct@gmail.com

💥Tummy Time
Babies must always sleep on their backs but tummy time is so important for babies when they are awake and supervised.
Tummy time can be done from birth. It supports the development of motor skills and is an important building block.

Limited tummy time can result in motor skills being reached at later stages and also puts babies at increased risk of developing a flat head.

If your baby does not like tummy time there are lots of ways to support and encourage it. Little and often is best to start with.

A children’s physiotherapist can support and advise on ways to improve tummy time and work on motor development.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at megan.infinityct@gmail.com

💥 Torticollis
Does your baby preferentially turn their head to one side or have a head tilt and struggle to hold their head in midline?
Do they fuss more when feeding on one side? or have you noticed a lump or bump on one side of their neck?

⚡️ Torticollis is a tightening of muscles on one side of the neck.

⚡️ Early intervention is important for the best outcome.

⚡️ An experienced paediatric physiotherapist can provide stretches, ideas on positioning and feeding along with education on the environment and equipment use.

⚡️ Please get in touch if you have and concerns or questions or if you would like to book an appointment.

💥 Have you noticed any flattening or an unusual shape of your baby’s head?

Babies heads are soft and easily moulded when they are born, allowing the head to adjust shape during birth.
A baby can be born with a misshapen head or can develop a flattening after birth. The medical term for this is plagiocephaly.

Plagiocephaly is as a result of prolonged pressure on the skull and can be caused by a number of reasons.
• Position in utero or during labour
• Preferential head turn to one side causing baby to always lie on one part of the head
• Tight neck muscles on one side which can result in limitations in moving their head
• Spending too much time on their backs and limited time on their tummy. It is recommended that babies always sleep on their backs but they should have supervised tummy time regularly throughout the day.

💥 Children’s physiotherapists are experienced in assessing and managing plagiocephaly as well as any associated concerns such as tight neck muscles. It is important to have your baby’s head shape assessed and intervention started as soon as possible to achieve the best outcome. As pressure is taken off the flat area the head shape can adjust and often correct fully. In more severe cases a degree of flattening may remain.

💥 If you wish to have your baby assessed by a paediatric physiotherapist please call or email for further information or to book an appointment megan.infinityct@gmail.com

It should be noted that plagiocephaly is cosmetic and does not put pressure on the brain or cause developmental concerns. If you are concerned about your baby’s head shape and they are showing any developmental delay you should seek advice from your GP or health visitor.
