World Encephalitis Day reminds us that recovery from brain inflammation doesn’t end at hospital discharge.

Many people continue to deal with ongoing challenges. Fatigue is one of the most common, along with weakness, changes in movement, seizures, sensory changes, pain, and difficulties with thinking or emotions.

These effects can have a real impact on everyday life - which is why ongoing neuro rehabilitation can play such an important role after encephalitis. If you or a loved one are experiencing ongoing difficulties, please contact us to discuss how we can support your recovery.

Fatigue in neurological conditions:

Fatigue is one of the most common and challenging symptoms experienced by people living with neurological conditions such as stroke, MS, Parkinson’s and brain injury. It’s more than just feeling tired - neurological fatigue can significantly impact movement, balance, concentration, motivation and recovery.

When fatigue isn’t recognised or managed, it can:
• Reduce participation in rehabilitation
• Increase risk of falls
• Slow functional progress
• Affect confidence, mood and independence

In neurological occupational therapy and physiotherapy, managing fatigue is a key part of effective treatment.

We work with individuals to help overcome the effects of fatigue:
• Pace activity and conserve energy
• Balance rehabilitation with adequate rest
• Optimise posture, movement and efficiency
• Build strength and endurance safely over time
• Adapt daily activities to reduce unnecessary effort

Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation and we believe that by educating and involving family members and carers, together we can help ensure:
• Realistic expectations around fatigue and recovery
• Consistent support at home
• Reduced pressure on the individual to “push through”
• Better long-term outcomes

Neurological fatigue is real and often invisible. Our specialist occupational therapist, Susie, has a wealth of experience helping people living with neurological conditions to manage and understand their fatigue. Education about managing symptoms of fatigue can have a significant impact on rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life. If you would like more information on how we can help please do get in touch.

Today is Stroke Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of how we can reduce the risk of stroke before it happens.

This year, the Stroke Association is encouraging people to monitor their blood pressure, as high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke.

High blood pressure contributes to around half of all strokes in the UK, yet many people don’t realise theirs is high. Regular checks, staying active, managing stress and making small lifestyle changes can significantly reduce risk.

As a neuro physiotherapy team, we see first-hand how life-changing a stroke can be for individuals and their families. That’s why prevention, early awareness and education are just as important as rehabilitation.

This , we’re proud to support the and encourage everyone to check their blood pressure, know the signs of stroke, and take action early.

Together, we can help stop strokes before they happen.

Following on from , promoted by the NHS, we wanted to share some guidance on how to stay active and well during the winter months - particularly for people living with neurological conditions;

✅ Keep moving indoors – try not to sit still for more than an hour. Walk, stretch, or do gentle exercises to maintain strength, balance, and mobility

✅ Dress in layers & stay warm – several thin layers trap heat better than one thick layer. Keep your home warm and bedroom windows closed at night

✅ Eat regularly & hydrate – a hot meal and drinks help your body stay energised and warm

✅ Enjoy outdoor activity – short walks or light gardening can boost mood, brain function, and overall health

Why it matters for neuro health:
Staying active can reduce the risk of falls, support heart and brain health, and improve mood and cognition. Even small bouts of movement can make a real difference.

If you want advice and support on how best to improve your balance and stay active during the winter months, please get in touch, the NPB team are able to help. 🚶‍♀️ 🚲 ⛳

A new year feels like the perfect time to reintroduce ourselves!

We’re Amy and Claire, the founders of Neuro Physio Berkhamsted.

We met while working at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and went on to launch our practice in 2010. As the demand for specialist neurological rehabilitation has steadily grown, so too has our team.

Today, Neuro Physio Berkhamsted is made up of a diverse group of highly skilled professionals. Alongside our specialist Physiotherapists, we now work with Neuro-specialist Occupational Therapists, Paediatric Physiotherapists, Vestibular Rehabilitation specialists, and Rehabilitation Assistants.

We built the practice while also starting our families here in Hertfordshire. In a lovely full-circle moment, one of our daughters has recently followed in our footsteps and begun her Physiotherapy degree in Leeds.

We’re incredibly proud of how far the practice and our team has come and would like to thank you all for your support so far!

We’re so honoured to have had this beautiful poem written about our neuro fitness classes by one of the group attendees!...

We’re so honoured to have had this beautiful poem written about our neuro fitness classes by one of the group attendees!

Amy's Group Exercise Class

Every Thursday just after noon
We meet at Ashley Green.
Where Amy runs her exercise class -
What a sight! It has to be seen.

There's Heather and Shelia, Keith and Fran
Asa, Paul and Ray;
We've all got our own aches and crakes,
But we enjoy it in machoistic way!

We warm up sitting in our chairs
Throwing bags and catching them if we can,
Going round and round and back again
'Til we're back to where we began.

Then, in pairs, we exercise at the wall:
Throwing a weight from our heads to the floor,
Or pulling on a strap, skipping without ropes,
Or high stepping and much, much more.

Amy and Karen check if we're doing it right
And help us if we've gone astray,
Whilst the air is full of girlish laughter
As some ladies chat away.

We're allowed just one break to sit for a while,
And relax for a minute or two,
But once refreshed by Karen's cups of water,
We've even more exercises to do.

Each time, we're rigorously put us through our paces,
There's really no place to hide,
But feeling some benefit from all our effort,
Gives us a sense of pride.

So, to Amy and Karen we give our thanks
For stretching us week to week -
Although when we leave, some feel knackered
And how our poor old bones do creak!
