Do you layer like an onion and wrap like a burrito?

On a recent Outdoor First Aid course, our learners put this into practice experimenting with different materials and wrapping techniques to prevent an ill or injured person from becoming cold.

As Duke of Edinburgh’s Award leaders and Forest School leaders, their mission is to inspire young people to develop a lifelong love of the outdoors and experience the many wellbeing benefits it brings. They also understand the importance of doing this safely.

It was a pleasure to share some of the practical games and activities we’ve tried and tested with young people over the years building confidence, competence and resilience in outdoor environments.

We’re proud to celebrate another fantastic achievement from our team at Act Fast First Aid.

Four of our instructors have successfully upskilled and completed the Level 2 Outdoor Food Hygiene qualification.

This is a great addition to our professional development and reflects our ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest standards in everything we do, especially when it comes to safety, wellbeing, and best practice in outdoor environments.

We’re excited to now add the Level 2 in Outdoor Food Hygiene to our growing list of qualifications as we continue to learn, improve, and deliver the best possible experience for everyone we work with.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at Act Fast First Aid, working across the country with York St John University in both York and London, delivering training in schools in Liverpool, and supporting the team at Doorstep Charity Hull.

We started in Hull, working with a fantastic group from Lift Hall Road School to complete their Paediatric First Aid.

From there, we headed to Cumbria to visit St James’ School, delivering the Act Fast Challenge to the pupils - a brilliant day with lots of energy and engagement.

A huge thank you to everyone we’ve worked with - it’s always great to see so many people building confidence in essential, life-saving skills.

New guidance on supporting children and young people with medical conditions and allergies is now open for consultation, ahead of coming into force in September 2026.

For the first time, the proposed requirements would mean schools must:

• Stock spare adrenaline auto-injectors for emergency use

• Provide allergy awareness training for all staff, including recognising symptoms, responding to emergencies and using adrenaline devices

• Improve incident recording and learning processes

• Have a clear policy for supporting children with medical conditions, including Individual Healthcare Plans such as allergy management plans

Schools we work with across the country are already doing a brilliant job at managing allergies. We’ve just been to Northwood Community Primary School in Kirkby this morning who have their own kit to use in an emergency.

The consultation is now open and will help shape the final guidance ahead of September 2026.

We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in a pioneering initiative that’s making communities safer across the East Riding of Yorkshire.

In what’s believed to be the first scheme of its kind in the UK, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has partnered with Act Fast First Aid to fit life-saving defibrillators to its entire fleet of bin collection lorries. These vehicles are out in our neighbourhoods every single day and now, they’re equipped to provide defibrillators in medical emergencies whenever and wherever they happen.

The campaign was officially launched by Councillor Paul West, alongside refuse crew members Andrew Fowler and Jay Hughes, highlighting the vital role frontline teams play in supporting the communities they serve.

This forward-thinking project demonstrates the power of practical innovation by turning everyday service vehicles into potential life-saving responders. This initiative could make a critical difference in those first moments of a cardiac arrest emergency.

We’re delighted to support a project that puts community safety at its heart and sets a new benchmark for local authorities nationwide.

As part of this ongoing partnership and project, we are very much looking forward to providing CPR and defibrillator training with the crews to help them feel skilled and confident to respond in an emergency.
