My journey to become a Podiatrist began in 2004. I was out of work, following a bad accident that forced me to change my career path of over 25 years of working with horses. I ended up being offered a job, in very unusual circumstances, I often still think this was “meant to be” in a local chiropody practice in Driffield. My role was that of secretary/receptionist/cleaner and all other manner of tasks, including being responsible for cleaning and sterilising all the chiropody equipment. I became interested in what my boss was doing, and she invited me to observe her treating some of the patients who were willing to let me watch. As a small child a really bad experience with a chiropodist when I had a verruca, had really put me off. However, I began to realise it wasn’t the awful profession I had made my mind up it was. So one day when she asked me what I thought to what she was doing, I answered, it wasn’t what I had expected it to be at all. Then she casually suggested I might think about training so I could work alongside her. I didn’t need to think about this for long. I was hooked. This led to me enroling on the Foot Health Professional course with the SMAE Institute.
I qualified in 2005 and began my journey working both part time in this practice, still fulfiling the role of receptionist. As my work increased I gave up the role of receptionist to focus on treating patients. I quickly gained a lot of hands on experience and my skills and k owledge grew working alongside the chiropodist.
In 2013 I decided that I needed to upskill further. This led to me calling the Huddersfield University, where I was accepted onto the Podiatric Medicine degree course. This meant four years of study part time around family committments and my current job working in the Chiropody practice. It was going to be hard work, but hopefully worthwhile. The degree course opened my eyes and gave me so much more than I ever expected to learn.
In 2017 I finally graduated, gaining a Batchelor of Science Honours degree with first class honours in podiatry. I was an actual Podiatrist at last!
