Auditory Verbal UK

Auditory Verbal UK We support deaf children to learn to listen and talk with Auditory Verbal therapy.

At Auditory Verbal UK, we want to see a world where all deaf children have the same opportunities in life as hearing children. Through play-based therapy sessions, parents are supported with the tools – Auditory Verbal techniques and strategies – to develop their child’s listening and spoken language. We offer internationally accredited training in Auditory Verbal therapy for early intervention professionals and work in partnership with a wide range of organisations to raise expectations for deaf children. We offer sessions to families in our London and Oxford centres as well as providing online sessions via a range of online platforms, including SKYPE, Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

“The Government must take action now” - Mia.

World Hearing Day is coming up on 3 March, and Mia — who is deaf and learnt to listen and speak with Auditory Verbal therapy — is urging Government Ministers at the Department of Health and Social Care - DHSC to take action.

More than 85% of deaf children can’t currently access Auditory Verbal therapy, leaving families to face a postcode lottery.

You can help change that. 👉 Write to your MP and ask them to support national guidance for Auditory Verbal therapy today: https://www.avuk.org/hearusnow

Together, we can end the postcode lottery of access to Auditory Verbal therapy. 🌟

It’s , and we’re celebrating by sharing practical tips from our Auditory Verbal Therapists on using books and stories to nurture children’s speech and language skills through everyday reading moments. 📚💛

This week shines a light on the joy and impact of storytelling. Stories help us understand the world, unwind, build connections, and develop key early literacy skills.

For children—deaf and hearing—storytelling is a powerful way to make sense of their experiences, strengthen memory, and build a sense of identity.

This top tip from Rebecca is all about engaging with the story beyond learning the sounds of letters and words through phonics and decoding – it's important to help understanding of the plot and the character's emotions and thoughts.

We’d love to know how you bring stories to life at home. Share your ideas in the comments below 👇

As World Hearing Day approaches on 3 March, Sam — who is deaf, learnt to listen and speak with Auditory Verbal therapy, and loves to talk about space 🚀— is calling on Government Ministers at the Department of Health and Social Care - DHSC to act and stop the current postcode lottery of access to Auditory Verbal therapy.

World Hearing Day, led by the World Health Organization, raises awareness of deafness and hearing loss and this year's theme is ‘hearing care for all children’. For deaf children, access to early, effective support to develop language and communication skills, whether their families wish to use spoken language, sign language or both, is absolutely vital. And for those families who want their child to learn to listen and talk, access to Auditory Verbal therapy is critical.

But currently more than 85% of deaf children and their families don’t have the opportunity to access Auditory Verbal therapy. This must change.

That’s why we need your help:

👉 Write to your MP and urge them to back national guidance for Auditory Verbal therapy: https://www.avuk.org/hearusnow

Together, we can make sure more deaf children like Sam can access Auditory Verbal therapy. 🌟

🌟 Meet Robin and hear about his inspiring journey learning to listen and talk!

“We learnt that our second son, Robin, was profoundly deaf when he didn’t pass his newborn hearing test,” said mum Katherine. “He was fitted with hearing aids at five weeks old, in the depths of lockdown in 2020. It was a lot to take in and felt like our worries about the future and big medical decisions overshadowed what should have been such a really happy time.

“We found out about Auditory Verbal (AV) therapy by chance after a segment about Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) on BBC News. We had no previous experience of deafness and were amazed by the listening and speaking abilities of the fantastic children in the piece. After lots of research, we signed Robin up to the family-centred programme at AVUK when he was eight months old, before he had his cochlear implants at 12 months. There were no Auditory Verbal therapists available locally to us through the NHS.

“Working with our Auditory Verbal therapist every fortnight gave us so much confidence, and the amazing feeling that we are doing everything we could to support Robin with his speaking and listening. It’s been simple to build the techniques into our everyday routines and to pass them on to other family members and nursery teachers.

Robin graduated from the Auditory Verbal therapy programme at AVUK in August 2025 aged four with spoken language skills equivalent to a six-year-old.

Katherine added: “'I wish I could have seen into the future when we were first told he was profoundly deaf – we would be amazed and so encouraged by all he has achieved with this early support.

“He is really enjoying school and has made lots of new friends alongside some old friends from his nursery in the class too.

“At nearly five years old, Robin is a bright, strong minded and kind little boy able to do everything his hearing peers can. He is loving starting to learn phonics and has a passion for dinosaurs and board games! We often have to beg him to stop talking – definitely not something we would have expected or even dared to hope for back when he was born!

🌟 Meet Tommie – today he is thriving after a difficult beginning. Here his mum Kirstie shares their story:

“When Tommie was born three months early at 29 weeks his condition meant he needed three operations before he was two months old. At that time his hearing was probably the last thing on our mind.

“When he had his newborn hearing screening three months after his birth we were told that the issues highlighted were probably because he was premature and we shouldn’t worry.

“We had more tests with inconclusive results – by the time Tommie was three and a half he had had eight hearing tests. Finally when Tommie was four his profound hearing loss was confirmed and we felt relieved that at last we had a diagnosis.”
Sadly Tommie’s late diagnosis was because of failures in NHS children’s hearing services. These serious failing were recently highlighted in the Kingdon Review.
Kirstie continues; “Thanks to the intervention and referral from the private audiologist Tommie received hearing aids and we began the process of getting his cochlear implants. He was five and a half when he was eventually implanted – we know that the earlier deaf babies have hearing technology the better for them.

“Through our private audiologist we also heard about Auditory Verbal therapy and Auditory Verbal UK and the support we have had has been unbelievable. Our Auditory Verbal therapist has been amazing, so supportive and understanding about Tommie’s needs and ours as a family.

“It has been and still is a lot of hard work. When Tommie’s friends were all learning to read and write he was learning to speak.

“We’re now preparing for the big transition to secondary school next year, which feels daunting, but I know we’ll keep advocating for what’s best for Tommie. We’re now fortunate to have access to excellent local services, a fantastic school community, and the transformative support from Auditory Verbal therapy that has helped Tommie find his voice — along with the ongoing guidance from the team at AVUK.”

🌟 Meet Grace!

Shortly after Grace was born in 2018, she was diagnosed as deaf - and her mum, Rhian, shares “It was a complete shock at first, with no family experience of deafness. Grace has an older brother, and I guess a mother’s instinct led me to know pretty instantly that I thought Grace was deaf within a few days of her being born. She was unwell, so there were other complications, but she wasn’t reacting to sounds, not flinching at loud noises...that kind of thing. The team at the hospital were amazing. They acted quickly and we were seen within a month at the Children’s Audiology unit, University Hospital of Wales.

“I think that was the most difficult experience to go through. When you’re told your child is profoundly deaf, you feel completely helpless.

“I did some research myself back in 2020 – I hadn’t heard of Auditory Verbal (AV) therapy before, and I was desperately searching for something that would help my child develop her speech just like her hearing peers. My concern was that she wouldn’t be able to communicate with the hearing world or fit in.

“Her Speech and Language Therapist remembered me mentioning AV therapy… thankfully the rest is history.

After three years being supported by AVUK on their family-centred AV therapy programme Grace graduated in July 2025 on a wonderful day of celebration.

“We are so incredibly proud of Grace and what she has achieved… Simply being able to use her voice to express herself is amazing.

“She is such a wonderful little girl who loves writing, colouring, drawing, dressing up, singing and dancing – just like her hearing friends.”
