Happy Friday the 13th!

The superstition around black cats grew out of medieval fear, when anything associated with independent women, intuition, or folk healing was labeled dangerous. Black cats were linked to witches, and witches were persecuted. The stigma stuck.

But before that era of hysteria, both Friday and the number 13 were connected to the divine feminine. Friday is named for F***g or Freyja, goddesses of love, wisdom, and sovereignty. The number 13 reflects the lunar cycle, roughly 13 moons in a year, long tied to women’s rhythms, intuition, and cyclical power.

In many cultures, black cats were actually considered lucky. Sailors kept them on ships for protection and safe passage. In parts of the UK and Japan, they’re symbols of prosperity and good fortune. They were seen as guardians of the home and bringers of abundance.

Black cats came to symbolize independence and mystery. What was once sacred feminine energy was reframed as something to fear.

So Friday the 13th isn’t unlucky. It carries old feminine symbolism, lunar rhythm, and intuition. And black cats were never bad omens. Historically, they’ve been protectors, lucky charms, and quiet keepers of ancient wisdom.
