💥 Bonus learning through play tip! Making play sounds (Ooh! Aah! Uh oh! Bang! Etc.) as you play with your baby, and encouraging your baby to imitate the sounds, is helping your baby develop early speech sounds and language skills.

🌈 These are the British Sign Language signs for colours I teach the families of babies and toddlers I work with. BSL has lots of regional variations - just like English has accents and dialects. The signs for colours are no exception.

I am a baby signing teacher using BSL signs, not a BSL teacher. If you’re interested in learning British Sign Language, in all its wonderful intricacies, look for a course that is properly accredited and taught by a member of the Deaf community.

When will your baby start baby signing? Follow me to find out
All babies are different. Your baby can recognise gestures and signs you make from around 2 months old, but in general you shouldn’t expect to see your baby making signs back to you until 6-9 months old. If your baby is older than that they may well pick up baby signing very easily as your baby has likely already hit some of those standard baby milestones for communicating with their hands (waving, clapping, pointing etc).

🧼 How to baby sign ‘clean’
Such a useful baby sign for post-mealtimes, nappy changes and bath times. Is your baby or toddler a clean freak, or a wet wipe avoider?

My name is Jason and I'm your local TinyTalk teacher and dad to twin TinyTalkers Ned and Edie (born December 2016).
My TinyTalk journey began when Ned and Edie were about five months old when my wife, Charlotte, and I took them to TinyTalk following an amazing taster cIass run by Helen Hine who was then running baby signing classes in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. I’d been interested in baby signing before they were born. It almost seemed too good to be true - the idea that you could communicate effectively with your baby before they were old enough to speak. But it wasn’t hype. It took a few months to get their first sign (unsurprisingly they both signed ‘food’) but then new signs just kept on coming.
Signing was invaluable to us through weaning, at bedtime, even at nappy change time. At just over a year old, when Ned and Edie began to sign each other’s names and started to tell us what each other was doing (‘Edie’s sleeping’, ‘Ned’s had a wee wee!’) my sense of wonder and pride just grew and grew. Babies really do have so much to say!
I continued taking Ned and Edie to TinyTalk classes by myself in Biggleswade even after Charlotte had returned to work (yes, it is possible with twins!). By 18 months they both used well in excess of 50 signs. Even now as they’re starting to verbalise they’re still signing along with their new words.
We went to so many classes throughout the babies’ first year, but TinyTalk was the only one we continued for more than a term or two. The babies were so attentive during the taught part of the class and giggled and enjoyed themselves so much during the songs and interactive elements (as did I!) that it never felt like we were learning. Couple that with the social time during the second half of each class, and TinyTalk was the highlight of our week.
When the opportunity to become a TinyTalk teacher arose, I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do. I am passionate about baby signing and to give new parents the prospect of the wonderful experiences baby signing has given us as a family fills me with excitement and purpose.
Each TinyTalk class is 1 hour long and split into two. The first half is spent signing, singing and doing sensory activities relating to the weekly theme e.g. pets, bedtime etc. The second half of the class is social time giving you the opportunity to meet other parents / carers and have a well-deserved cuppa and biscuit while the children play with toys. A weekly handout of signs learnt in each class helps to jog the memory once you're home. You can start at any point throughout the term (subject to availability) and there is no extra charge for siblings. Free taster classes available - please contact me for availability.
I look forward to welcoming you to a TinyTalk baby signing class soon!
