Nikki joined FunctionAbility in July 2024 as a Therapy Assistant, after a career as a primary school teacher and becoming a mum of three. With two neurodivergent children and EHCPs, she understands first-hand what it means to navigate the tribunal system and fight relentlessly for the right support.

When complex needs and school refusal required a more flexible path, Nikki stepped into our Administrator role, all while studying in the evenings for her SEND Law qualification and turning lived experience into meaningful change. That’s exactly who she is.

✨ A huge celebration today at FunctionAbility ✨

To some, this might look like a simple plate of typical lunchtime foods you’d find in any supermarket or café. But to us, and to this family, it represents months of trust, patience, incredible growth and bravery!

We received this photo today from some ecstatically happy parents (shared with consent). Their child has been working so hard with their OT, gradually expanding their safe foods through play-based, sensory-supported sessions, with absolutely no pressure, no demands, and no expectations.

What makes this moment truly extraordinary?

👉 The child specifically asked for these items themselves for lunch, outside of OT sessions, completely unprompted!

This is the power of child-led therapy, safety, and connection.

We are beyond proud of this amazing child, the OT involved, and the incredibly supportive parents who trusted the process every step of the way 💛

Late talking vs speech delay...

As Speech & Language Therapists, we’re often asked: “Should I be worried, or should I wait?”

Some children are late talkers and go on to catch up naturally. Others may be experiencing a speech or language delay and benefit from early, targeted support. The difference isn’t just about how many words a child uses, it’s about understanding, interaction, play, and how they communicate overall.

When we look early, we’re not labelling, we’re supporting. Early advice can make a huge difference and, in many cases, gives parents peace of mind.
