New in Stock: Syrian Rue
Peganum harmala, commonly known as Syrian rue, has been used for millennia across the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa in traditional medicine, as a natural dye, and in various cultural and spiritual practices.
Incense and Purification: In Iran, Turkey, and neighboring countries, dried capsules or seeds are burned to produce an aromatic smoke (known as "espand" or "harmal") that is used to purify the air, ward off the "evil eye," and protect against ghosts or bad luck.
Spiritual and Ceremonial: The smoke is used in various ceremonies, including Zoroastrian rituals and wedding ceremonies in India, to create an auspicious atmosphere and avoid darkness.
Dye Production: The seeds are a source of natural dyes. A water extract yields a yellow fluorescent dye, while an alcohol extract produces a red dye (known as "Turkish red") traditionally used for colouring wool and carpets.
