📣Announcement!

As you may be aware, I have put Mini First Aid Wirral & West Cheshire up for sale. I have loved delivering classes. However, due to personal reasons, I can't continue and decide to sell

🥁 Well, we have a new owner!

The new owner will be taking over from the 14th December!! They will be introducing themselves closer to the handover date. They are currently planning new class dates going forward!!

That means the following classes will be my last classes for Mini First Aid Wirral & West Cheshire:

🟢 29th November 10am at Beehive Healthcare Chester
🟢 14th December 10am at The Five Villages Hall Backford Chester

If you have attended a class with me in the past and want a refresher, now is the time to book!!

I'm gutted I won't be delivering classes anymore, but fear not the new owner will be continuing these fantastic classes!!

If you want a private class with me before the 14th December, please get in touch beckie@minifirstaid.co.uk to discuss

After the 14th December the new owner will be ready and waiting to deliver the classes for you!

I will be saying goodbye closer to the time, but for now, thank you for all your support over the past 7.5 years, and hopefully, I will see you at one of my last classes!

Take care
Beckie x

❗️Are your child’s Christmas gifts dangerous?

Mums and dads, you are probably already starting to think about, or pick up, Christmas presents and stocking fillers for your child, so this is your friendly reminder to think about potential choking and other hazards that may be present in your child’s presents!

🎁 Button batteries - these little silver disc batteries are found in lots of toys and other gadgets around your house and are highly toxic. If swallowed, they can corrode your child’s throat or stomach.

🎁 Lego and other small building bricks - these are not only painful to step on, but some pieces are small enough for a baby or child to swallow, and sharp edges make them easy to get stuck in a child’s windpipe.

🎁 Magnet toys - these popular toys are small and easy to swallow. They can travel to the stomach and gather together, tearing internal tissue.

🎁 Balloons - balloons and other latex items are a choking hazard if swallowed or inhaled, which can happen easily if your child is blowing a balloon or playing with burst leftover material.

🎁 Buttons & detachable parts - toys or dolls with small parts like button eyes and wheels can be dangerous as items like this can fall off or be pulled off and swallowed.

🎁 Marbles - in the same way that grapes and round foods are a hazard, so are marbles that can easily lodge in your child’s airway.

This list is by no means exhaustive. We don’t want to be the toy/fun police, but please take a few minutes when choosing toys or gifts for your child to think about potential risks and don’t leave your child to play with a new toy on their own - check it out yourself before you hand it to your child to play with.

A sparkler!

Families often see sparklers as a relatively safe way to involve young children in the excitement of fireworks events. But that’s not true. Every year they cause children devastating burn injuries.

Sparklers burn hotter than boiling water. They can even burn hot enough to melt some metals.

If you’re going to use sparklers, treat them with caution and remember:

💥They’re not recommended for children under 5
💥Wear gloves and keep the sparkler at arm’s length, as sparks can fly and ignite clothing
💥You may want to put the sparkler in a carrot to make it easier to hold
💥Only hold one sparkler at a time
💥Teach children not to wave sparklers near anyone else or run around while holding them
💥Once sparklers are out, put them in a bucket of water as they stay very hot

🟢 Strokes: Why acting FAST can save a life 🟢

When it comes to first aid, we often think about bumps, scrapes, and little ones with grazed knees - but some health emergencies can strike completely out of the blue. With World Stroke Day just a few days ago, Kate opens up about her dad’s stroke and what she learned from that life-changing day. It’s a powerful reminder of why knowing the signs of a stroke - and acting FAST - really can save a life.

👻 Super Scary Halloween Treat Choking Hazards 👻

At Mini First Aid, we love Halloween as much as you do, but some Halloween treats like hard candy lollipops, popcorn, nuts and marshmallows are all choking risks and not recommended for toddlers and small children.

Hard lollipops and boiled sweets are a popular trick or treat gift but they can easily become detached from their stick and lodge in a child’s throat.

Nuts like peanuts/monkey nuts which are popular at Halloween are hard for small children to bite into and chew, and Popcorn with its sharp edges and kernel flakes can also be a choking hazard.

Marshmallows are sticky and hard for small children to safely chew. They can stick in a child’s windpipe and restrict their airway.

There is the added risk of your child eating these while running around, having fun trick or treating in the dark, not concentrating on chewing or eating, and you not noticing that they might be choking.

Stay safe this Halloween and keep sweet treats like this away from your small children and toddlers.

And have lots of spooky fun! 👻 🎃

No-one wants to be the ‘fun-police’ at Halloween but some Halloween costumes, including wigs and masks, can be highly flammable and are not always subject to the same fire safety checks as normal clothing as they can often be classed as toys.

Halloween is a time where lots of lit candles in pumpkins are on the doorsteps that trick-or-treaters visit and congregate on.

Excited children gathering for sweets are not looking at where their costumes are trailing or candles that they might be standing too close to.

Tips:

🎃 Be careful if buying from cheaper unknown brands online

🎃 Look for the UKCA or CE mark, if you’re in England, Scotland or Wales; if you’re in North Ireland, look for the UKNI symbol along with the UKCA or CE mark.

🎃 Look for the En71-2 mark. All costumes, including wigs and masks, should also be flame-retardant in accordance with EN71-2 (the safety standard for flammability of toys).

🎃 Look for labelling that indicates the costume’s undergone additional British Retail Consortium (BRC) checks. This will mean the costume is likely to have been made to a higher standard of fire safety.

🎃 Use battery operated lights instead of candles

🎃 Be vigilant when out trick or treating or at Halloween parties 🕯️
